Forget-you-not

Our memory isn't what it used to be, but we will never forget those who have bravely fought and sacrificed for our country. This Memorial Day, we honor those fallen heroes. Salute and remember soldiers at these local happenings:

  • The pipes, the pipes are calling you — as are the fifes and drums — to High Point's Memorial Day Service at 10 a.m., Monday, May 30, on the corner of South Main and High Street. Traditional music, wreath-laying and a speech from Brigadier General Norman Cooling will pay tribute to those we remember.
  • At 11 a.m., Monday, May 30, The Carolina Field of Honor at Triad Park in Kernersville holds its annual Memorial Day Ceremony, featuring speeches, song and prayer.
  • While Memorial Day is a grave time of reflection, it's also an opportunity to learn. From 10–11 a.m., Monday, May 30, take a Memorial Day tour of the New Garden Friends Graveyard, highlighting historical sites and honoring those lost in battle.
  • Get on your bike and ride in the Ride to Remember, starting in Charlotte and ending in Kernersville at The Carolina Field of Honor, revving up at 8 a.m., Monday, May 30.

Fin-ale-ly, it's happening

Pour some lager on us! Greensboro's newest brewery, Steel Hands Brewing, is now open. Cruse in for a brews-ing.

To Serb, with love

Serbia, Bum-bum-be-dum-bum-bum-be-dum-bum. From noon–10 p.m., May 28–29, enjoy live music, traditional Serbian dances and food, plus kids activities at Serb Fest, happening at St. Basil of Ostrog Serbian Orthodox Church in Kernersville.

If we could pick, we would picnic

Our fav way to connect with the community is through food. BYO picnic — or purchase a boxed meal from Chez Genèse or the Historic Magnolia House —to the Downtown Greenway Community Picnic from 5–7 p.m., Sunday June 5. Chow down while Activate entertains with music and live performances. Ticket sales end on May 30; kiddos 10 and under are free.

The Edgewood of glory

The rock might blow, but the art sure as heck doesn't at Blowing Rock's Edgewood Cottage, where weekly art shows kick off this weekend, running through Labor Day.

Are you talented AF (as folk, obvi.)?

The only thing we can carry is on, like the wayward son we are. If you — unlike us — can carry a tune, enter the N.C. Folk Fest's Not Your Average Folk Contest, open through June 12. Go ahead and show 'em how above average you are.

Jazzed for the weekend

Forget about the piles of laundry — what piles? — and head to the O. Henry Hotel for its Eat, Sleep, Jazz Memorial Day Weekend Experience. Enjoy private performances, delicious dining, jazz brunch and nightly turndown for what.

Ziggy, Ziggy, Ziggy, Ziggy, can't you see

Live music abounds at Ziggy's.Space in High Point, bringing you roots, rock and reggae under one roof. This week, you can catch a range of music from country to DMB vibes and hard rock. Get your yacht rock elsewhere, peeps.

Today is the greatest

Actually, Wednesday, May 25 — even though tomorrow's much too long — is the greatest because the Smashing Pumpkins will be rocking out at the White Oak Ampitheatre at 7:30 p.m. We haven't been this pumped since the shakedown of 1979.

We could go On & On

We're always on time when it comes to killer shows like Erykah Badu & Friends, hitting the Greensboro Coliseum on at 7:30 p.m., Friday, May 27. Badu has some bada$$ friends, including Ja Rule, Musiq, Goodie Mob, Comedian A-Train and poet Moses West.
