Early Season Vineyard Tasks

After last week’s extremely warm weather, grapevines got enough heat to break bud and we are already seeing 2 to 3 inches of growth on the new shoots. I would anticipate that we will be in bloom in southern Wisconsin in the next 10 to 14 days. To make sure we start this new growing cycle in the best possible way, here are a couple of tasks to get done during the early season.

Grape Plume Moth

Grape plume moth may start showing up in vineyards soon, though it is a sporadic insect in vineyards in the Midwest. The characteristic injury is caused by the larvae webbing together the terminal leaves on a shoot to protect themselves from predators and parasitoids while feeding on the tender leaves. Peak infestation usually occurs around the end of May into early June in southern Wisconsin. Learn more here.

Promoting Flower Bud Formation in Honeycrisp—the Time Is Now

Honeycrisp starts flower formation really early in the season and by the time fruits are 30 to 36 mm in diameter, which corresponds to about 45 days after full bloom, buds have already formed flowers for next year. How do we ensure good return bloom for next year? Read more here.
