Robert Mangan,  Principal

Dear Parents, Caregivers & Friends of the College

It has been a positive start to term 2 with the boys enjoying the great unseasonal weather, up until the last couple of days.

This term is a very important term in regards to the overall academic achievement of your sons for the year.  Your interest in his achievement and ongoing support in this regard will be of signfiicant benefit.

Thank you to all of you who took the opportunity to engage with your sons teachers at our Caregiver / Teacher conferences via Google Meet over the last two weeks.  I would encourage you to have  a conversation with your son and either affirm his progress or give encouragement for him to respond to the guidance of his teacher.  Due to demand, a number of teachers were fully booked and therefore a number of you were not able to engage with your sons teachers.  I invite you to communicate via email with the subject teacher, should you have any specific concerns that you wish to raise.  The email addresses of teachers are available via the parent poortal on the website and follow a standard format of first initial of christian name.surname@tbc.school.nz (e.g. a.smith@tbc.school.nz).  Further information will be shared with you towards the end of term with a mid-year progress report.

An important week for your son to be aware of is our Senior Assessment Week, begininning Monday June 13th through until Friday June 17th.

We wish all our Arts students well as they travel to Napier today to represent the college at the NZ Super 8 Schools Cultural Festival.  I know that they are looking forward to this event after the cancellations that have occurred over the last two years due to COVID.  My thanks to all the staff who are supporting the various groups in practices leading up to the event and then travelling with the group in support.  I look forward to sharing the results with you in my next newsletter.

My thanks to members of the QSA group who spoke at assembly today and also to Sam Penny, one of our Prefects who shared the words of a former student.

Ngā mihi nui

ABSNZ CONFERENCE

A once in a lifetime experience! The ABSNZ Conference involves Head Prefects and Headmasters from 42 schools from all over the nation. My experience began with the Super 8 Schools meeting, where we discussed our experiences as well as challenges within our schools and how we are solving them. Next was our surprisingly action-packed walk down Queen street to dinner on the waterfront. Here, two ex-Head Prefects of Auckland Grammar and Rosmini spoke to us about their past experiences and offered advice.

Dilworth Schools' rural campus was the venue for our second day of activities and the discussions with 42 like-minded young men were mind-blowing! We enjoyed a day of more hands-on leadership activities and returned to the Cordis Hotel for our formal dinner.

Highlights were the conversations and getting to know people, but what struck me most was the words of our speaker; Jake Bailey. The whole room was in awe, to hear someone like Jake speak felt unreal.

Allan Bunting, Gold medal-winning Women 7’s Coach was our first speaker on the final day. I personally resonated with Allan to the extent that I had goosebumps. It’s fair to say he moved the room to tears. What I admired what his honesty, vulnerability and the mindset he adopts in his everyday life, despite the challenges. Jack Salt, a professional Basketball player and mental health enthusiast was our final speaker. After a few theatre games and paper scissors rock battles, we were presented with the challenge of being ‘interviewed’ by all of the Headmasters.

Overall I felt so grateful to have an opportunity like this. The friends, connections, and learnings I made, alongside some pure fun times, left me sad to leave. I look forward to implementing all that I have learned and developing life-long friendships with outstanding leaders.

Thank you to everyone who made it possible!

Taine Larsen, Head Prefect

TBC PREFECTS
OUT AND ABOUT

Prefects from Tauranga Boys' College and Tauranga Girls' College have been working with some of our local primary schools to support leadership development, help with house events, and to demonstrate how to be role models to our younger students.

Last week a group of TBC Prefects visited Welcome Bay School helping out with the Cross Country event.
Congratulations to Taylor Harrison and Jade O'Brien Tanoa who both won a COVID awareness poster design competition.  The competition was run by Partnership Through Collaboration Trust and both boys won brand new laptops.

SPORT
CLAY TARGET

An awesome day of competition in Taupo yesterday. We took two teams A & B. Both competed very well. There were 30 teams competing and we were ranked 4th. The difference was between 1-10 points between us and the first. Out of the 150 participants, Billy Eynon was the best 4th shooter. Overall, an amazing day with a development side after 5 senior shooters left for greener pastures.
FOOTBALL

The First XI headed to Hamiton this week to face St John's College in the first of this year's national qualifiers. After last year's close victory this game proved to be anything but as the team romped to an 8-0 victory. Jonty Bidois scored a quick fire hat trick and Alex Searle's effort saw us turn 4-0 up.

The second half continued with a familiar pattern as Searle added two more to complete his hat trick, Bidois got a fourth and Aran Carter scored the crucial 6th from a yard out. The St John's goalie had a fine game as we could have added many more.  Nathan Rostron and Henry Kemp dictated play well from the back and Xavier Maddox impressed with his industry and physical presence. Tristan Kawana also played well on debut.

Next week the team heads to Hamilton again to face Hamilton Boys' High School.
Plenty of action also during week 2 of the season:
  • Senior Development Blue 0 - 6 Senior White (pictured below)
  • Otumoetai College 1st XI 1 - 11 Senior A
  • Junior A 3 - 7 Senior Development Blue
  • Senior White 5 - 1 Whakatane Boys' 1st XI
  • Senior Development White 1 - 2 Trident 1st XI
  • Mount College Junior A 4 - 2 Junior B
  • Junior C 7 - 3 Otumoetai College Junior B

FUTURE PATHWAYS
Pathways, Gateway, Pasifika, Māori Achievement, Secondary-Tertiarty Partnership
PATHWAYS

This is a big term in the Pathways space as our lads start to do some serious exploring in terms of future options.

Last week we had visits from five universities; Lincoln, Canterbury, Massey, Victoria and AUT. These follow on from the successful visit from Waikato earlier in the term.  Our Year 13 boys who are moving onto tertiary study should be actively seeking information on a range of institutions. We will be running an information session on applying for scholarships in week four and are happy to answer as many questions as we can.

We are taking a bus load of boys to the Waikato University Campus at Hamilton on Friday the 27th and there a couple of seats still available for any Y13 boys who might be interested.

Alongside the universities we have had visits from Primary ITO and The MAST Academy. Primary ITO oversee apprenticeships in agriculture and horticulture in New Zealand and The MAST Academy provides excellent access to boat building, mechanics and fabrication. These two sessions are open to boys from Y11 up.

Finally, we continue to have a number of businesses reaching out to us in search of employees, all of these opportunities are advertised on our website ‘On the Hunt’. Follow the link below to check it out and let us know if you, or anybody that you know has work they would like to advertise with us: tbc.school.nz/on-the-hunt/newsletters/issue-8-the-food-issue

REQUESTS FOR HOLIDAYS
DURING TERM TIME
I am concerned with the number of requests I receive from parents for time off for their sons during the school term to travel domestically or internationally for holidays.

I understand the educational value of travel but remind parents to be mindful of the impact time away from the classroom can have on your son's academic achievement.

Of particular concern is when this absence occurs at the same time NCEA internal assessments are planned, as this can have a significant effect on your son's NCEA results.

Ministry of Education regulations only allow me to give permission for absence from school due to illness or family bereavement and advise that all trips / holidays should be taken during official school holiday periods.

I would ask that all requests for leave are sent to me at principal@tbc.school.nz

My preference is for all leave of this nature to occur during the school holidays.  Leave from school for holiday travel that is taken outside of school holiday periods will be recorded as "explained but unjustified".

Thank you for your assistance with this.

HEALTH & WELLNESS
School Health Service

The school nurse this year is Vicki (Mon-Thurs) who is a fully registered nurse funded by the Western BOP Primary Health Organisation. The clinic is located down by the gym and there is no cost for the youth health services. This is in addition to the sickbay team at the main office with whom the nurse work closely, to provide best care to the boys at TBC.  There is also a GP who does a short clinic each Monday for those who may face barriers to accessing their own GP.

In an attempt to support our young men with any challenges and to identify any barriers to learning at an early stage, health assessments may be done in Year 9 (or other years if required) and include a discussion around; physical health, growth and development, hearing, vision, activities, eating and weight, school and home, drugs and alcohol, sexuality, mood and safety (HEADDSS).

If you would like more information or for your son
to 'opt out' from being involved then please contact Vicki:
