Summer Reading Program begins June 16!

Our annual Summer Reading Program is almost here! Each week, there will be an hour-long program that begins at 11 a.m., on Thursdays at the Elkins Community Center (162 Doolin Street). The programs are intended for students in kindergarten through fifth grade but all are welcome.

Preregistration is not required and reading logs will be handed out at each meeting for those that would like to participate. The reading logs, which will be available each week, will be based on how much time is spent reading, not by book. Participants can complete logs to win weekly reading prizes and door prizes.

Here is the schedule as we know it right now:

June 16
Alan Burdick, Magician

A former professional symphony conductor, Alan has traded in his conductor’s baton for a magic wand. He delights audiences of all ages by combining music and magic.

June 23
Marshall Mitchell, Musician

Marshall Mitchell, the singing cowboy, along with his band of Clean Water Raingers, are Heading Downstream to perform for our program. Kids will imagine what they can do to care for the rivers, lakes, and streams in their own neighborhoods as they learn about water’s journey downstream into the “Oceans of Possibilities.”

June 30
Dr. Jessica Kowalski, archeologist

Dr. Jessica Kowalski is now the Station Archaeologist for the Arkansas Archaeological Survey and Research Assistant Professor at the University of Arkansas. She will be sharing about the world of archeology, which is yet another world that can be explored!

July 7

The details of this week are still being determined but we hope to know more soon! We are working on something fun involving dance!

July 14
The Amazeum
Circuit Creatures

Let’s dive into the electrifying world of circuits! We will explore the basics of circuitry with lights and batteries. Our young inventors will gain new problem-solving skills by transforming the purpose and possibilities of everyday items into glowing ocean creatures.

July 21
Galen Harp, Institute of Jugglology

Galen Harp from the Institute of Jugglology is back! This award-winning juggler has great fun and education programming just for kids.

Read, Ride Run ends June 3

Read, Ride, Run is coming to a close in less than three weeks! All money and logs are due at the library no later than 6 p.m., Friday, June 3. We will determine the winners and announce them on June 7 with prize pickup at the Library on June 8. You can still sign up online or pick up a printed registration packet at the Library. This is a great opportunity to have a fun, last-minute fundraiser at your workplace, with your family, or a group of friends!

Storytime ends May 26

We've had a great time this spring with the reading program and have been delighted to see it grow nearly every week! The last day of Storytime is May 26.

Robotics Summer Program begins June 8

The last regular Elkins Robotics meeting is Wednesday, May 25. The summer program starts June 8, thanks to an IEEE Pre-University STEM Portal Grant. The grant is funding the purchase of micro:bit microcontrollers and micro:bit robot car kits for use in the Tinker Squad program. Tinker Squad summer participants will get to build and learn to program their own robot cars and demonstrate what they have built at Elkfest on August 13. Tinker Squad is a free program for students having completed grades 2-12. For more information, contact the Elkins Public Library at audrabell@elkins.arkansas.gov or (479)643-2904.
Closed May 30, July 4
We will be closed for Memorial Day on May 30 and Independence Day on July 4.

Friends of EPL meeting June 21

The Friends of the Elkins Public Library will meet 6 p.m., June 21, at the Library. We will be finalizing details of the Harry Potter event and possibly discussing plans for Elkfest. Anyone wanting to be involved is welcome to attend!

Friends is revitalizing and the new board is already planning great things. We would love to have you as a member and now have new membership levels:
Individual: $10
Families: $20
Businesses: $50

You can pick up an application at the Library or we can email a PDF to you. The annual dues help support the Friends programs. Are you looking to become involved? Here are areas where Friends members can help:
  • Boxing books on a weekly basis
  • Committee member (such as planning committee for the library)
  • Fundraising Projects
  • Helping with special events as needed
  • Manning a booth at various city events
  • Marketing/Publicity
  • Set-up/tear down bi-annual book sale
  • Shelving books on a weekly basis
  • Work cash register during bi-annual book sale.
We are working on new programs to serve the Library and Friends members so stay tuned!

Board meeting July 11

The Library Board of Directors will have their quarterly meeting at 6 p.m. on July 11. An official agenda will be released as the meeting approaches. They will be doing the annual grounds tour as well to check for any grounds/building maintenance issues.

Harry Potter night July 23!

Who loves Harry Potter? In honor of Harry Potter's birthday, we are co-hosting a fundraiser with Nellie B's, Elkins Community Network, and the Elkins Parks Committee. We will have concessions, games, and showing the first movie, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone! All this is taking place July 23 at Bunch Park (Elkins Community Center if there is rain). Activities and concessions start at 7:30 p.m. and the movie will start around 8:30 p.m. We can't wait!

Support Friends with Amazon

Did you know that Friends of the Elkins Public Library has an Amazon Smile account? You can support Friends through your Amazon purchases simply by designating Friends as your chosen charity and when you shop, make sure it's from smile.amazon.com. Amazon will then donate a percentage of your sales to Friends to support the Library. Don't worry, we can't see what you order or how much! In fact, Friends will get a quarterly deposit and it won't have any donor names attached at all. Learn more at our donor link

Our Writing Class is Growing!

When local author Linda Rigsbee approached us about teaching a writing class at the Library, we were excited to say yes! We're even more excited to see it grow. The class meets 10 a.m. to noon every second Saturday and has a different theme each week. Linda hopes it soon turns into a writers critique session, too! The June 11 session will be about learning how to create a character when writing.

Elk Excursions this Summer!

It's almost time for the summer program at Elkins Public Schools and we are excited to participate! We will be working with the schools, IEEE Robotics, and Elkins Community Network for several fun trips to the library, reading programs, and more. Part of their program will be called Elk Excursions where they go out into the community to learn more about what is available in our community.

Have you started using the Libby App?

The legacy OverDrive app will soon be retired and our digital library will best be enjoyed with Libby. Libby offers the same collection of digital titles from our library, but with new features we know you’ll love:
• A unified bookshelf for all your loans and holds
• Tags to categorize your books
• Push notifications
• Preferences to see only the content you like
• Support for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
• Wish List syncing across libraries and devices
• And more!

Thank you Master Gardeners!

We are starting to see lots of green and other bright colors pop up on library grounds thanks to the volunteer efforts of our local Master Gardeners. Thank you!

Cookbooks on Clearance

A couple of years ago, Friends of EPL put together a cookbook with recipes submitted from local community members. We have some left and they are on clearance and going fast! Visit us at the Library to purchase them. At only $5, they are a great gift idea, even to include in a gift basket representing Elkins!

History Project Needs You!

We've had an amazing number of submissions for the Elkins History Project and need some volunteers to learn how to scan in the information and upload them to the website. Please contact Audra at AudraBell@elkins.arkansas.gov to learn more.

Weekly events

We have several ongoing events that happen weekly at the Library!

Yoga/Stretching on Tuesdays

Yoga with Danielle recently renamed her Facebook page to Beginner Stretching with Danielle. She hosts free yoga classes at 6:15 p.m. every Tuesday. Each month she shares the new schedule on her Facebook page. We also share on our Facebook page.

Knitting Club Thursday evenings!

A group of ladies meet every Thursday from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Library to knit, crochet, or do any other craft!

  • We offer free notary services at the library?
  • We have free wi-fi that stretches outside? Sit at the picnic tables and enjoy the sunshine while using the internet.
  • That any library member can schedule the community room ... for free? No sales are allowed. Contact the library for more information and to schedule the room.
