Happy Teacher Appreciation Month!
That's right! We said month!
Happy Teacher Appreciation Month to all of the educators in our community. Whether you are an ABE teacher, an MCB PhD student, or an Ed.M. student from HGSE, we acknowledge and recognize your impact on education.  
ABE MA Teacher Recognition Event
On Saturday, May 7th, ABE MA teachers, friends, and family embarked on a Charles River boat tour luncheon to celebrate and recognize the work of the ABE MA community. This was the first recognition event since October of 2019, and as such, the first time many of our teachers have seen one another.
There were high winds, many hugs and smiles, and a ton of laughs (since the majority of jokes in Alia's speech landed).

Things are to get even Fuzzier this summer since Mary Roach is coming! 
We've heard from Neil Shubin, Amy Stewart, and this summer we're adding Mary Roach to the list! More information to come but save the date!
All ABE MA teachers are welcome, regardless if you have participated in this spring's book club. 
Summer Workshop with miniPCR ft. Bandit™️ 
ABE MA is teaming up with our friends at miniPCR to host a free PD workshop on Wednesday, July 13th from 10:30 AM - 2:00 PM at the Harvard University Science Center where teachers will get their hands on their new lab tool, Bandit™️.
This workshop is intended for middle and early high school science teachers.

The NEB Molecular Biology Summer Workshop at Smith College
This could be the summer you learn something new. Imagine yourself at the lovely Smith College. The Molecular Biology Summer Workshop, co-hosted by New England Biolabs, will be held in-person in Northampton, MA from July 17-30. Both ABE MA teachers, Don Pinkerton and Deb O'Reilly, have participated in this workshop previously!

Origin of life theory involving RNA-protein hybrid gets new support
Structure that links amino acids suggests that early organisms could have been based on an RNA–protein mix.

Chemists say they have solved a crucial problem in a theory of life’s beginnings, by demonstrating that RNA molecules can link short chains of amino acids together. This might have allowed for ever-more complex RNAs, proteins and combinations of the two — a possible path to the chemistry of life that we know today. The findings support a variation on the ‘RNA world’ hypothesis, which proposes that, before DNA evolved, the chemical ancestors of biological life were based on RNA.

Learning and Living in Polarized Times | May 18, 2022, 3-3:30 PM EST

InnovateBio is co-hosting two summer workshops with Cold Spring Harbor's DNA Learning Center (Methods in Personal Genetics and DNA Barcoding, DNA Sequencing, PCR, and Taq Supply Chain Production and Teaching Biotechnology Skills through DNA Metabarcoding Biodiversity Research). Faculty who complete each workshop receive a $500 stipend and will receive year-round mentoring and support as they implement in their classes, including free reagents and DNA sequencing. A limited number of travel awards will be offered to participants on a first-come basis.

Join the ABE Program Office for the eighth installment of the ABE Teacher Roundtable series. This month, they are discussing bioethics – what it is, why it matters, and how to engage students in relevant bioethics topics. The ABE panelists will discuss the importance of bioethics as an emerging field, describe strategies for integrating bioethics into science classrooms, and share examples of classroom activities and curricula they have used to help students explore this new domain in biotechnology.
