DAREBIN CITY COUNCIL'S COMMUNITY NEWSLETTER

JUNE 2022

Welcome to Your Darebin – our monthly newsletter highlighting key events and projects happening in your neighbourhood, told by people who live, work and play here.

We acknowledge the Traditional Owners of the land on which we work, the Wurundjeri Woi wurrung people of the Kulin Nations. We pay our respects to Elders past, present and emerging.

CELEBRATING REFUGEE WEEK 2022

Dare to Care volunteer Judith Pimentel and Darebin Mayor Councillor Lina Messina are celebrating Refugee Week this Friday at a free community event.

This week marks Refugee Week, an opportunity to honour refugees around the globe and celebrate the strength and courage of people who have been forced to flee their home country to escape conflict or persecution.

The theme for Refugee Week this year is ‘Healing’, and this Friday 24 June the Darebin community will come together for an evening of healing through shared food, stories, cultural performances and more.

Organised by the Dare to Care team of the Focolare Movement and supported by Darebin Council, the free event is an opportunity to celebrate and understand our different backgrounds, cultures and traditions.

Dare to Care volunteer Judith Pimentel said the event aimed to celebrate not only refugees and asylum seekers, but everyone.

"We believe that our lives are enriched more and more by our meaningful connections with people from diverse backgrounds," Judith said.

Registrations for this event are now closed, but you can show your support by donating to the Refugee Council of Australia.

PROTECT PRESTON MARKET FIGHT GOES ON

We are continuing the fight to protect the historical, cultural and social value of Preston Market and to ensure any developments in the precinct consider the site’s heritage as well as its potential.

Current plans would result in about 80 per cent of the market being demolished, and that’s just not good enough.

We want the market protected in its current location, site and form. Now is the time to act.

There are a few ways you can join the fight to help #protectprestonmarket:

  1. Sign Darebin’s petition to Protect Preston Market
  2. Write to the Minister and your local MP to express your concerns with the new plans and processes.
  3. Tell everyone what you love about Preston Market on social media using the hashtag #protectprestonmarket
  4. Pick up and display a FREE Protect Preston Market fence sign, available at our customer service offices in Preston (Gower Street) and Northcote Library (Separation Street).

We will continue to work with our community to #protectprestonmarket – let’s keep up the fight together!

Read about what’s happened so far in the fight to protect Preston Market and get the latest updates at the Preston Market Your Say page.

USING YOUR FOOD AND GREEN WASTE BIN

Have you received a new food and green waste bin? Watch our video to find out how to use the service.

Soon everyone who uses Council’s kerbside waste service can recycle their food scraps and green waste.

During June and July we’re delivering 22,000 more food and green waste bins to Darebin residents, along with free kitchen caddies, to help everyone recycle food scraps.

Darebin Mayor Councillor Lina Messina said expanding our food and green waste recycling service is one of the most significant steps Council can take to reduce waste to landfill and reduce greenhouse gas from waste.

“Reducing food waste going to landfill is a part of our plan to achieve zero greenhouse gas emissions for Darebin by 2030,” Cr Messina said.

“It’s one part of what we can all do at a local level to tackle the climate emergency.”

To find out more visit our website. If you already have a food and green waste bin and would like to order a free kitchen caddy, please complete our online form.

WORLD ELDER ABUSE AWARENESS DAY

Sue is the President of Home Away from Home, a social group for older Chinese people in Darebin.

As part of celebrating World Elder Abuse Awareness Day on 15 June, we're acknowledging the wonderful contributions older people make to our community every day.

Sue is the president of Home Away from Home, a social group for older Chinese people in Darebin.

The group meets at East Reservoir Senior Citizens Centre every Monday to cook and eat traditional foods, play games like table tennis and Mahjong, and importantly, to chat in their language.

Sue said volunteering to help run the group allowed her to contribute something to her community.

“I enjoy helping people. I just want to contribute. If I have spare time, and I can help people, I’ll help.”

Thanks to Sue and the many older people in Darebin who give so much to our community!
