Can you believe it is May already?! Harmony Woods is looking really beautiful right now - If you haven't been up there recently, why not come along to our Monday workdays or sign up for our Bioblitz event on Saturday 28th May? It truly is a lovely place to spend a few hours!

Our 10th Anniversary celebratory projects are underway - there are lots to get involved with and we would love to see you there, including: choral workshops with Paul Sartin and Jackie Oates, live zoom plant music concert from Cornwall with Justin Wiggan, woodworking workshops with our Tmbershare project leaders, One Ash art exhibition with Chapel Arts Studios, Winterbourne walks and choral performances with artists James Aldridge & Paul Sartin, citizen science events in Harmony Woods and our regular volunteer workdays. And a very special end-of-decade concert in Harmony Woods on July 16th - Save the date!
Check out the events section below for more details.

Thank you very much to everyone who supported our 10th Anniversary Gala and Auction of Promises on 6th May. We are still counting but we think around £4000 was raised (the exact amount to follow in the next newsletter).

Thanks to a National Lottery Reaching Communities grant, we can now officially welcome new staff members Serena Read and Alex Walker. We will be introducing you to them in more detail over the coming months.

As well as participating in upcoming celebratory events, we are also looking for behind-the-scenes support. If you can spare even 1 hour a week, please contact volunteers@andovertrees.org.uk . Everyone is welcome!

Looking forward to celebrating with you over the summer,

VOICES IN HARMONY: ATU TO LEAD RESIDENTS ON A MUSICAL JOURNEY IN CELEBRATION OF WOODLANDS

The 'Voices In Harmony’ project was conceived in conjunction with musician Paul Sartin and sound artist Justin Wiggan.

The project will collect stories and memories and combine these with a reworking of traditional songs to create a new ‘Tree Shanty’ composition.

These will be performed alongside traditional folk songs in Harmony Woods. A series of school and community-based choral workshops, under the creative stewardship of accomplished musicians Paul Sartin,  supported by Jackie Oates, will prepare participants for the concert.

Sign up to join the intergenerational choir now! Email: volunteers@andovertrees.org.uk

TIMBERSHARE: WOODWORK WORKSHOPS IN HARMONY WOODS - SIGN UP NOW

We are hosting a series of workshops as part of our ‘Timbershare’ project using the excess wood generated from the timber-frame cabin build and the One Ash project. The timber to be shared is locally felled larch, cedar, and ash.

Learn new or brush up on your woodworking skills. Make and take home with you: bird boxes, bug hotels, planters, small items of furniture, household items or create your own from the wealth of materials available.

The exact dates for each workshop are almost ready - please get in touch now if you are interested and we will send you exact details as soon as they are ready. The website will also be updated accordingly.

(If you or anyone you know would like to help lead and teach - we are still looking for support woodworkers)

PLEASE EMAIl ALEX WALKER

'Timbershare' is funded by the The National Lottery Community Fund and IKEA UK, as part of the pilot programme, Places Called Home
ONE ASH: EXHIBITION
CHAPEL ARTS STUDIO, JULY 2ND TO JULY 23RD

In February 2020, One Ash tree was felled. Since then, we have been following the journey of it’s timber as it is transformed into its end product. From charcoal to chairs, we’re bringing artefacts from the tree back together, along with schools contributions, in this final exhibition celebrating all that can come from one single tree.

BACKGROUND
One Ash’ is a ‘6 Trees & 6 Flowers’ project with a focus on sustainable forestry.

In three parts – meet the tree, be there for its felling, follow the tree’s gift of timber as it passes into the hands of the people who will process it – ‘One Ash’ will give 130 pupils and students from 4 Andover schools a greater understanding of the role of trees in our lives. We hope it will inspire them to see trees in a new light and bring a greater connection to this precious natural resource.

Through meetings with craftsmen, artists and wood processors and, where feasible, visits to workshops, the young people involved will be introduced to the world of wood and the people who work it. They will have the chance to follow the journey of the timber from one felled ash and chart the many forms that we hope it will take over the next two and a half years.
