Sydney Gardens Gala 11th September

Hello everyone

We would like to invite you to join us for an afternoon of free family fun, music, circus and spectacle in Sydney Gardens on Sunday 11 September 1pm-5pm to celebrate the completion of the Gardens Restoration Project.

Throughout the afternoon of Sunday 11 September, the Gardens will be alive with performances and activities in the true tradition of Georgian Pleasure Gardens.
Visitors will be able to see the locally based Rainbow Steel Band and Turkish Folk Band, Chalguh Chengi. Sparklin’ Sorcha & Juggling Jim will entertain you with fire-eating, juggling and stilt-walking. You’ll be able to try your hand at tennis, petanque and hula-hoop and ‘Go to the Loo’ on a special tour of the rare and restored cast iron toilets (booking essential visit Eventbrite:

There’s a new play area to explore and there’ll also be ribbon wand-making, cyanotype printing, donkey rides, a fire engine on show and a Forest School especially for children. There’ll be stalls with inventive activities for the whole family in archaeology, astronomy, beekeeping, climate action, local heritage and more.

As the Gala coincides with the first weekend of the Jane Austen Festival, you can bring a picnic to mingle with ‘Jane Austen’ and her friends on the lawn and experience 'a whole camp full of soldiers', with authentic drill displays, music, and talks at the Holburne Museum.
If you need a breather, take part in a wellness workshop or wander the quiet areas of the Gardens and take a look at the new planting and works to preserve and enhance this special space for future generations to enjoy.

We really hope you can make it to celebrate the end of the Sydney Gardens Project with us.

Our build programme has been affected and delayed by the Covid pandemic as well as other factors by around 14 months.

We have had permission from the National Lottery Heritage Fund to extend the project until the end of 2022 to enable us to continue to deliver the restoration project as close as we can to our plan and within budget, but with no additional funding available.

The Friends of Sydney Gardens
The Friends of Sydney Gardens is a community organisation formed in 2013 to promote awareness of the gardens, gather community feedback on improvements and developments and to foster the gardens' care and maintenance.

The Friends run a volunteer gardening session on the second Sunday of the month from 10am to 12 noon. There is a regular group of friendly people - contact Gill if you would like to join them. All tools provided and a warm welcome!

The Sydney Gardens Tree Trail has been created by the Friends in partnership with us. Over 1000 trails have been taken from the perspex box in the park since we launched it last December with lots of views of the online version too. The latest updated versions have now been printed and are online too!

Each tree on the trail has a QR code to access in depth information via the Friends website

Access the Sydney Gardens Tree Trail online or pick up a printed leaflet (in the perspex box by the notice board at the park entrance behind the Holburne).

We nominated Gill for Volunteer of the Year Award with Your Parks, and she won! Congratulations Gill - your contribution to the Sydney Gardens Project has been outstanding.

Please help support your local green space - contact Gill Gazzard at the Friends.

Please join the Friends to support Sydney Gardens now and in the future.
