WADDESDON MANOR

Celebration Week - Monday 20th to
Friday 24th June inclusive - 10 am to 2 pm

We are really excited to invite you to take part in our very special week to celebrate the life of Miss Alice de Rothschild, who owned Waddesdon between 1898 and 1922. Alice was an extraordinary woman with a love of gardening, and we are running special workshops to reflect those interests of hers.

There will be a variety of workshops on offer for your pupils to take part in:

The Wartime Kitchen Garden: Explore rationing in both World War and the ‘Dig for Victory’ campaign with Tastes of History

The Edwardian House: A look at how the Arts and Craft movement inspired a revival of apothecary skills. Pupils will be able to have a go at making their own treatments!

A Grand Day Out: A look at Edwardians at leisure

Massive collaborative artwork: with artist James Brunt, we hope to create a large-scale natural artwork which all pupils who visit will have collaborated on

Natural Dyeing: Have a go at dyeing your own Shibori work to take home, using woad and other natural materials

Meet the bees with the Bucks Beekeepers Association (on some days)

Plant some vegetables to take home and explore how horticulture can help with mental wellbeing

We also have a supporting resource pack for further use throughout the year

The cost is £10 per pupil, but do remember that you can apply to the Rothschild Foundation’s Schools Access Fund if you’re a Buckinghamshire school. Certain criteria apply but more details can be found here: https://rothschildfoundation.org.uk/buckinghamshire-grants/schools-access-fund

VACHE BAROQUE
Interested in a Year 5/6 creative music workshop for your school in the Autumn Term 2022?

We have designed a half-day workshop & show all about tuning. This educational project is part of our autumn project celebrating the  300th anniversary of J.S. Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier (Book 1). This fully-funded workshop is aimed at Years 5 and 6 and will be quick-paced, funny, and interactive. The creative team making & performing in the show are multi-talented singers, actors, and musicians with a lot of experience in educational settings. Depending on staff support, we would be able to offer this to between 30 and 60 children at a time.

The aim of these workshops is to:
Entertain and intrigue children, encouraging them to find out more about classical music/pianos/wind instruments

Help them to connect other music that they might already listen to with classical music in their minds (by explaining the history and science of tuning)

Connect music to other subjects, in particular physics and maths

George Grenville Academy
Stories Come Alive for Buckingham

On Thursday 27 April, Year 5 children from George Grenville Academy took part in a storytelling event at Buckingham Library entitled 'Our Buckingham Stories'.

This was a collaboration between Buckingham Library, Friends of Buckingham Library Trust, George Grenville Academy, The Red Phoenix Storytelling Company, students and staff from the University of Buckingham and the Canal Society.

George Grenville Academy pupils had been working with storyteller and founder of Red Phoenix Stories, Terrie Howey, for two full days in the lead-up to the event. During these sessions, pupils learnt about the art of storytelling and were guided through the process of creating their own stories.

The theme for this year's event was 'The History of Buckingham'. The children carried out their own research on the town and took walks to local well-known landmarks to get some inspiration for their stories before letting their imaginations run wild.

After a storytelling Olympics competition, where children performed their stories to a panel of judges, the most well-developed stories were chosen and performed in front of an audience of parents, pupils, teachers and residents at Buckingham Library.

Emma Killick, Headteacher at George Grenville Academy said, “We were so privileged to be part of this local event. Terrie’s inspired storytelling instilled a deeper confidence in our pupils than I have not previously seen. Watching them perform their stories in the library at the event was extremely moving.”

BUCKS MUSIC TRUST
RGSHW 'Digging Up The Past' A collaboration between the Art and History Department

It all started with the discovery of the work by a little-known artist, Duncan Cameron who was inspired by the power and narrative behind various curiosities and artefacts. Cameron produced a series of studies drawn whilst at Pitt Rivers Museum in Oxford. This captured our imagination and led the Art Department to discuss the concept of archaeological finds, artefacts, and the impact on the society at the time with the History Department. The History Department loved the concept of, 'Digging Up The Past' and how by studying the various objects the pupils could gain an understanding of perceptions and in particular the relationship with the British Empire. We created a cross-curricular project, ending with an A5 two-sided postcard, one side created during their art lessons, and the other in history lessons.

The inspiration for this postcard was gathered on a trip to Oxford that took place just before the Easter holidays. All of Year 8 attended the trip. The pupils spent the day sketching and photographing in either Pitt Rivers Museum or the Museum of Natural History followed by a walking tour around Oxford, including a trip up to St Mary's Church tower, the led by the History Department. The connection with Oxford, the objects drawn within the museum and how they inform ideas within the classroom and between subjects has been an invaluable experience to the pupils and one that they found incredibly enjoyable.
