IIS Academic News
Dear friends and colleagues,

We're thrilled to share with you this month a number of exciting developments, not least the launch of our brand-new website, as well as details of a very special event celebrating Dr Janis Esots (1966-2021) taking place next week. We very much hope you're able to join us, either in-person or online.
IIS launches new website
We are delighted to announce the launch of the new IIS website, which benefits from a complete redesign and the addition of several exciting new features.

Two core improvements are at the heart of the new website. First, you will enjoy faster and more intelligent search functionality, which will mean that you can find relevant content quicker. You will be able to search and filter listings on our news, events, publications and course pages, so that you can find the content you want easily.

Second, the way information is displayed has been upgraded to make it easier to scan and find information more quickly, including new horizontal menus and a related items section on each page.

We hope you find these four key new features particularly useful:

"A Fatimid Text on the Necessity of the Imamate: The Book of Interim Times and Planetary Conjunctions (Kitāb al-Fatarāt wa-l-qirānāt)" by Alex Matthews
Bowl with courtly and astrological motifs, late 12th-early 13th c, Met Museum

This lecture will discuss the contents and context of The Book of Interim Times and Planetary Conjunctions as well as the state of current scholarship on it. While engagement with astrology and other occult sciences was popular during the era of Fatimid flourishing, there are few surviving texts that document the Fatimid engagement with these philosophical trends. The Book of Interim Times and Planetary Conjunctions, popularly attributed to Ja‘far b. Mansur al-Yaman, represents one such confluence of the assertion of the necessity of the Fatimid imamate bolstered through engagement with the occult sciences. This engagement demonstrates both an awareness of the utility of the occult sciences as a political tool—as astrology was used by the Abbasid caliphate—and a creative re-interpretation of how the occult sciences could be appropriated into the existing metaphysics of Ismaili theology and philosophy.
