A Message from the president

It is hard to believe that we are in June already. I’m a little bit sad that our last Business meeting of the year is coming up. But, first up on June 4th is Woofstock, the fundraising event for Butte Humane Society. Some of our members have signed up as volunteers. We will also have a booth set-up where we can share our club information with the community. If you would like to help out, just let me know!

Speaking of fundraisers, were you at our Bunco Tournament? If not, you can watch a video on Instagram. You will see the participants having FUN at our fundraiser. Thank you to all that worked on this event.

At a recent meeting I passed around a committee interest form. If you missed the meeting and you are thinking about a committee or two that you would like to be on next year for our club or if you have questions, drop me a line. president@sibidwellrancho.org I will have the list at the June Business meeting.

Are you new to our club? Or would like to know more about our Board positions? If you would like to learn more about Soroptimist, you may want to sign up for the Soroptimist Development Retreat. This is a 2-day event in Reno, NV. Part of the fun is getting to know each other better and meeting Soroptimists from other clubs. For more information go to the Sierra Nevada Region Website: soroptimistsnr.org

In August we will have our club Board Retreat (8/6) and our club Membership Retreat (8/7). We will be making our plans for the upcoming club year. This takes place in a relaxed atmosphere. You will hear more about this in July.

As I said at the start, our last Business meeting of the club year is in June. We will start back up with Business meetings in September. I hope to see you before that!

Linda

Meet Maria Frias

My name is Maria Frias. I’m married and have 3 children: Nubia 7yrs. (Girl) Tomas lll 2yrs and my baby, Miguel Angel (Michelangelo, That’s how I call him) he’s just 6 months old. I’ve been living here in Hamilton City since I came from Mexico in 2014. It was hard for me in the beginning because of the language barrier. I never gave up and I’m still learning. In 2016 I went to Butte College and until Spring 2021, I was attending Chico State to major in History. I stopped taking classes because my husband got a back injury and since last year I had to work full time to support our family. I still have my dream of finishing my education and be a Historian! I’m currently working at Sierra Landscape and Maintenance since March 2021 and right now I’m the Office Manager. My boss Cathy Gurney invited me to join this group and I accepted because I wanted to do something for myself and to help others. I joined Soroptimist because I love and support the idea of encouraging women to be the best of themselves by providing access to different services that can help them thrive in society by improving areas they need, like wellness, education,… I believe the more we are educated, the better because that way we can help our lives so we can be self independent and live the best of our lives.

FAQ: Brand Messaging Refinement
What are SIA’s refined mission, vision and tag line statements?
Vision: Women and girls have the resources and opportunities to reach their full potential and live their dreams. (this has not changed)
Mission: Soroptimist is a global volunteer organization that provides women and girls with access to the education and training they need to achieve economic empowerment.
Tag Line: Investing in Dreams Why did SIA elect to refine our mission statement and tag line? We are gearing up for our next century and our next big goal to invest in the dreams of half a million women and girls. The SIA Board and staff, in consultation with a branding expert, felt it was a good time to strengthen and focus our messaging.
What is the purpose of mission, vision and tag line statements? These statements are for branding purposes. A mission statement describes an organization in terms of who you are, what you do, how you do it and for whom, and why it matters (the outcome). The goal is to educate. A vision statement describes what the world will look like after you’ve accomplished your mission. It should be short and inspirational. A tag line is a short phrase that inspires people to learn more about you. What do we hope to gain by changing our brand messaging? We hope this change will help increase our recognition and inspire people to join and/or donate to our cause.
What was the process by which SIA changed the mission and tag line? SIA worked with a branding firm, Iris Communications and its president, Beth Brodovsky. Beth led the SIA board in a series of exercises designed to provide direction and build consensus. From there, Beth worked with staff to create options. The SIA Board reviewed the options, considered whether it conveyed our desired message of who we are, what we do and for whom, and why it matters (outcome) and passed these refined messages at its June 2019 meeting.

Happy Birthday!
