QUARTER 2

This quarter has come with both challenges and still many wins for AKA. We are grateful for our clients and the new opportunities. As the summer weather is here to stay, we hope you have a great Fourth of July weekend!

MONTESSORI SCHOOL

CHICAGO, IL

This first time build-out of a tenant space in a newly built high-rise building is designed to suit the needs of a Montessori School. The design takes advantage of the natural light and creates a well-lit and safe environment for children.  AKA worked closely with the City of Chicago on special considerations for this space based on existing conditions and the proposed institutional daycare occupancy. The school contains classrooms for children ranging from 9 weeks old to 6 years old and support spaces as required by the State of Illinois.

A SUMMERY SHIMMER

Warm metallics are a wonderful way to bring in some of that summer shimmer and a modern touch into your space. Bronze, copper, brass, gold and rose gold are commonly used as accents and can certainly be mixed and matched. For a bold look, contrast cooler metals like silver or stainless steel with warm tones.

Be sure to consider the finish of the metal as well. Combining smooth polished metal with hammered, matte or brushed can help generate more balance and intrigue in the space.

QUARTER 2 UPDATE

AIA National states that for the fifteenth consecutive month there has been an increased demand for design services reported by architecture firms. The upswing over the past year has been a very encouraging sign. Interestingly, a larger amount of work has leaned toward existing building work rather than new construction. This trend has resurfaced for the first time in two years and the data seems to forecast reconstruction demands continuing to increase.

PORTRAITS OF THE CITY

While Chicago's epic skyline is known worldwide, ceramic artist Katie Lauffenburger and illustrator Phil Thompson of Wonder City Studio are highlighting the smaller architectural moments in Chicago's residential neighborhoods. Their ability to create ceramic planter replicas as well as illustrated portraits of homes has put them on the map in Chicago. Read more here.
