Building a stronger STEM program


A new STEM Next collaboration with the Institute for the Study of Resilience in Youth (ISRY) wants to learn more about using this planning tool to increase equitable family engagement in STEM during the summer and fall of 2022. Eligible programs will receive $1,500, consultation support, and professional development in summer and fall 2022 for taking part. Interested? Complete this form by June 10.

Afterschool staff Peer Learning Community

If you provide STEM programming in an afterschool setting, you're invited to apply to Missouri AfterSchool Network's 2022-23 STEM Peer Learning Community. Participants will receive 1:1 coaching, curated STEM playlists and the opportunity to network with peers.

SUMMER RECHARGE RESOURCES

Set the stage for a #SummerofSTEM


Summer break is upon us and we know families and educators deserve a recharge. Learning Heroes suggests families lean into activities that refuel interests and reconnect with passions while keeping learning at the center. (You can see all of their tips for a summer recharge here.) If you're still looking for ideas, here are a few places to start:
 

For high school students

Consider a camp to explore career pathways or check out a makerspace or learning lab to try new skills.
 

Engineering U // June 8-10

Meet engineers, architects and drafters working on chemical, civil, electrical and mechanical engineering projects plus summer interns and college admissions professionals during this three-day experience at Burns & McDonnell. There's a special session just for girls!

KU Engineering // July 10-15 & July 17-22

For an intensive on-campus experience, consider KU Engineering Camps. Campers will work closely with KU faculty on hands-on projects in a choice of seven engineering disciplines during a week-long session on campus.

UMKC Cybersecurity // July 25-29 & Aug 1-5

Crack the code to cybersecurity career options during this FREE camp at the University of Missouri-Kansas City Volker Campus. The camp does not require any previous experience and includes breakfast and lunch.

Makerspaces and learning labs 

The Kansas City Digital Media Lab, Best Buy Teen Tech Center and makerspaces at the Johnson County and Olathe public libraries all provide great spaces for experimenting and trying out new skills this summer.

For elementary & middle school students

Build on interests or discover new possibilities by tapping into free STEAM programming around the region or embarking on some fun STEAM activities at home. A few options:
 

Free library programs! 

The Mid-Continent Public Library includes STEAM programming on the regular. Check out upcoming sessions at branches around the metro. The Kansas City Public Library's youth and family programs offer hands-on learning you can enjoy together. And the Kansas City Kansas Public Library has outdoor learning, a Girls Who Code series, in-person science fun and more.
 

Summer camps, day camps + STEAM at home

For educators

 

Materials Camp for Teachers // June 13-17

Learn the basics of Materials Science Technology as taught at the high school level during this cost-free, week-long camp at UMKC.

You will work hands-on with metals, ceramics, polymers, and composites and will leave with a comprehensive series of low/no cost laboratory demonstrations in applied science to use in chemistry, physics, math, technology and industrial arts. Download this flyer for more details.

Exeter Math Institute // June 20-23

Calling all math teachers! The Exeter Math Institute returns in person to Rockhurst High School this June. During the four-day workshop you can spend a majority of your day working through thought-provoking problem sets with other math educators. (And receive $240!) Get the full details. DIVERSITY IN STEM

Call for nominations: 9th annual STEMMys

On October 27, Central Exchange will present the 9th Annual STEMMy Awards Gala Luncheon at Fiorella’s Event Space in Overland Park. Your nomination helps recognize Kansas City business and civic leaders, students and educators, entrepreneurs and advocates who work together to increase gender diversity and who excel in their STEMM field.

Categories include Student Achiever, WiSTEMM Educator, Enterprising Innovator, Corporate Hero, Rising Trendsetter, Groundbreaking Leadership and WiSTEMM Champion. Nominations close June 17.

Camp NAWIC // June 6-10

The National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) partners with members of the Kansas City construction industry to offer high school age girls an opportunity to learn in a hands-on FREE summer day camp the basic skills of carpentry, electrical, welding. Camp activities also include a field trip, tool demonstrations and more. Register by May 27.

Innovator Award winners were notified with a drum line during the showcase event at Union Station


Project Lead The Way Senior Showcase

Nearly 400 students from 36 schools came together to showcase their senior capstone projects in engineering and biomedical sciences at Union Station on April 26. Visitors, who had the opportunity to attend in person for the first time since 2019, found projects ranging from automatic dog doors to a train warning system and an app to help those with intellectual disabilities call or text.

KCKPS smashes Math Week goals
during #RemakeDaysKC

Kansas City Kansas Public Schools more than doubled their #MathWeek goal of 300,000 minutes during Remake Learning Days! Math Week, produced through a partnership with Mind Research Institute's ST Math, invited families to spend time together on math stories and games. And they did—recording a total of 602,142 minutes—equivalent to about 120 in-person family math nights!

STEM ADVOCACY

Kansas expands computer science education

Kansas Governor Laura Kelly signed bipartisan House Bill 2466 to promote computer science education in Kansas schools and provide additional funding for current and aspiring teachers to receive training in computer science programs.

According to FlagshipKansas.Tech, the bill also establishes a pilot program that covers credential exam costs, assists technical education students in their transition to the workforce and provides scholarships for educators in rural areas and underrepresented socioeconomic groups to obtain computer science education training.
