Who are they for? These LIVE, in-person, math camps are for any student who attends a traditional school (public, private, Waldorf, or not) but needs some skills work to get ready for the upcoming school year.
Jamie York Academy Summer Math Camps are particularly helpful for the following students: A homeschool student who is planning to join Jamie York Academy in the fall, but feels the need to work on some skills before the school year begins. A student who was in the Math Academy this past year, but feels that a bit more skills work would be helpful.
Grade 6: The four processes, long division, fractions, decimals, factors, mental math, puzzles.
Algebra Prep (Grade 9): This course is designed to prepare students (mostly rising 9th graders) for their first full-year of algebra (often called “Algebra I”). Topics will include: fractions, signed/negative numbers, basic algebraic equations, simplifying algebraic expressions, laws of exponents, unit conversions, puzzles.
Algebra Review (Grade 10/11): This summer camp is for students (mostly entering grades 10 and 11 ), who have already taken an “Algebra I” course, or have taken our 9th Grade Math Academy. For those who have just completed their first year of algebra, this will provide an opportunity to have the algebra skills and concepts really “sink in”. For those who haven’t done much algebra in a while, this will provide for a much needed review of “Algebra I” before stepping into “Algebra II” or our 11th Grade Math Academy.
Students will be assigned about 10 minutes of homework per day.
Note, these are not necessarily small groups. There could be 50 students or more in a class, but students will work in smaller breakout groups some of the time.
