New Board of Directors Announcement & Development Opportunity

Meet Marc Woons, one of our three new Board of Directors.

Marc Woons moved to Lethbridge in 2021, from Victoria, and joined the Board in 2022.

A Senior Project Manager with the Alberta Investment Management Corporation, Marc provides leadership and support on large-scale organizational change initiatives. He has more than 15 years of experience in strategic planning, project management, and change management. This experience is primarily in the BC public sector within finance, health, political, and IM/IT sectors.

Marc also holds a PhD in Political Philosophy from the University of Leuven in Belgium, where his research focused on Indigenous politics and the importance of promoting self-determination. Now instead of publishing in his field, Marc consults with Indigenous organizations who are on the front line in their struggle to assert their rights as outlined in the Canadian Charter and UNDRIP.

Marc’s volunteer experience includes managing election campaigns, sitting on literacy boards, two summers in Ghana with Health NGOs, and coaching and mentoring youth with CUSO and Youth Challenge International. He’s excited to learn and work with Volunteer Lethbridge!

The Equipment Lending Library - Explore the opportunity!
------------------------------------------------------

The Recycling Council of Alberta is exploring the concept of an equipment lending library for Lethbridge residents in collaboration with local organizations. Participants could borrow items that are rarely used, hard to store, or expensive.
Shared items could include:

• tools
• maintenance equipment
• hobby or recreation items
• household items
• sports equipment – items not accessible from local rental businesses.

A lending library may help reduce community-wide waste and consumption and contribute to social inclusion, accessibility, and affordability for members of the community. The initiative could be complemented by additional community programs such as training workshops, repair/fix-it sessions, and community events (sewing tutorials, vehicle maintenance workshops, etc.).
Please let the council know what you think by completing the survey.

HELP US BUILD A ROADMAP TO "EMPATHY IN ACTION" IN CANADA

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Every cultural shift begins with the spark of an idea. And that idea starts a conversation.

You can join that conversation. During National Volunteer Week, Volunteer Canada, in partnership with the Rideau Hall Foundation and Employment and Social Development Canada, launched a national conversation about empathy. Specifically, how to turn empathy into action. That conversation will contribute towards building a roadmap to empathy in action, and ultimately a national voluntary action strategy. Volunteering can help us develop empathy, to see the world through the eyes of others. It can connect people from diverse backgrounds and life experiences, expanding our view. Volunteering – giving, acts of kindness, or however you define being in the voluntary service of others – can build our capacity to work collectively and contribute to a vibrant, inclusive society.

Take a few moments to add your voice to this important conversation!
