FROM THE COUNCIL PRESIDENT

President Leif Sigmond Reports from the 2022 Annual General Meeting and May Board Meeting

On May 5, 2022, the ICOYC held its Annual General Meeting by Zoom. We had a terrific turnout – 29 of our 46 member clubs were in attendance.

Immediately after the AGM, the Board held a meeting so that the Directors could elect Officers. I was honored and humbled to be elected as your new President. Goncalo Esteves of Clube Naval de Cascais was elected as Vice President for Europe and Chuck Lowry of Seattle Yacht Club will take on the role of Secretary. All other positions remain.

I want to sincerely thank our retiring officers, President David Mead and Vice President Mark Inkster, both of the Royal Southern Yacht Club. David Mead has been an amazing President. He led us through the challenges of COVID and always had a steady hand on the tiller, even when waters were rough. As Secretary I was privileged to work with him often. He acted as more than just a president; he was an advisor, mentor and, most importantly, a friend. Normally I would say that I will miss David, but he has agreed to attend Board Meetings and remain a trusted advisor to the Council.

Mark Inkster has served the Council well for many years. We look to Mark for his keen insight and organizational abilities. I will miss him in our Board Meetings. He too is a friend and I know he will continue to be active in the Council.

At the AGM, four new Directors were elected by the Members. I am delighted to welcome to the Board: Colin Morehead (Royal Cork Yacht Club), Tony Guio (Real Club de Barcelona), Patrik Salen (KSSS) and George Ehlers (Royal Thames Yacht Club). I look forward to working with our Board. We certainly have a strong team.

I also want to thank the Directors who stood down after completing their service to the Board: David Mead, Mark Inkster, Richard Chapman (Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron), Nils Klippenberg (Royal Norwegian Yacht Club), Peter Ahern (Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club), and Ludovica Reggio (Yacht Club Italiano). They all served the Council very well and will be missed. We hope that they stay active in the Council.

I am thrilled to report that the Board voted to approve St. Petersburg Yacht Club (Florida) as a Council member. The club will be a wonderful addition to our membership. I look forward to working with them.

Finally, the Board discussed our future forums and conferences and began planning for the next year. The next World Forum will be held at the Royal Vancouver Yacht Club in September of 2023. Royal Vancouver is where the Council began years ago, so it is only fitting that we meet there after our pause due to COVID. Regarding the Regional Conferences, the preliminary thought is to hold them in the Spring of 2023 in advance of the World Forum. I had the pleasure of attending both the conference in Barcelona and New Orleans and I was reminded just how valuable these events are to Members. The Board plans to develop a schedule for the next few years so that we can all plan to attend in advance.

At Chicago Yacht Club our boating season is about to begin. Boats are filling the harbors along the city front. I am optimistic that this year may be more “normal” than the past two. I really look forward to meeting you all in person once again.

Respectfully,
Leif Sigmond
President

Remote-Control Fleet Engages Members
During the pandemic, Members at Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club welcomed a fleet of remote-controlled sailboats. Svea Now Sailing Under the KSSS Burgee
When boat builders Tore Holm and Gustaf Plym designed a J-boat under the working title “KSSS J-Boat” in 1937, they could not have known that J-boats would experience a resurgence in the new millennium, and that their boat would finally be brought to life 80 years later to sail under the KSSS burgee.
