Dear Fellow Rotarians and friends,

Great news that NSW has joined the rest of Australia in banning single-use plastic bags from 1 June.  In addition, from November, the NSW government will ban single-use plastic straws, stirrers, cutlery, plates, bowls, and cotton buds, expanded polystyrene food ware and cups, and rinse-off personal care products that contain plastic microbeads.  This is great for the environment as single-use plastics and plastic packaging comprise about 60% of the state’s total litter and will prevent 2.7 billion plastic items from adding to the state’s waste pile.

Our social gathering with Tania and DG Lindsay’s home had a good turnout.  Members enjoyed fellowship and camaraderie with delicious food being catered by the LUHO restaurant in Crows Nest. Craig played “sommelier” and had a wine tasting corner showcasing wines from the Leogate Winery fund-raiser for the Club.  The gathering was enhanced by a pavlova made by Brian Hall and chocolate cake by Robyn Sleet.

Our club members assisted the Salvation Army Red Shield appeal from 23-29 May in Lane Cove by manning static displays at the Plaza, the Canopy, and IGA at Burns Bay Road.  The total collection from the static stand and digital doorknock amounted to approximately $23,881.  Thank you to all the volunteers who helped through the week.
This week we had Mark Anderson, Senior Coordinator, International Fund Development at Rotary International South Pacific, and Philippines office (based at Norwest) present a zoom talk on the Rotary Foundation.  However, Mark focused on local Rotary Clubs and the topic of community engagement.  He rightly pointed out that local Rotary clubs are often used as “fundraisers” for other charitable organizations rather than Rotary projects.  For membership growth and enhanced community participation that enhances the Rotary branding, it is best to do a community assessment and see where Rotary can make the biggest impact.

The Rotary Club of Beecroft of which Mark is a member has had membership increased and diversity of members since doing this assessment.  Two successful community engagement projects for them have been the Young at Heart festival and the Rotary Virtual Neighbours. We as a Club need to take the time to seriously evaluate our community engagement and participation in the coming months ahead as we face the issue of declining membership and the ability to attract new blood to the Club.

The Pride of Workmanship Award has been postponed to a later date. Next week we look forward to Adrienne giving a talk about her recent travel trip to the USA at Hotel Urban.    Till then, everyone keep safe.
Regards,

This Week's Guest Speaker, Mark Anderson presenting on
behalf of The Rotary Foundation - "Our Charity".
Due to unforeseen circumstances the meeting  was held on Zoom. We thank Mark for being flexible to change at short notice from a face-to-face to a virtual meeting.
Thanks Tania and Lindsay for your superb hospitality! The event was supposed to be a ground floor BBQ but on account of the horrible weather is was held in their apartment. Sadly some members had to miss out due to the limited capacity. Better luck next time!
Thanks to all the members who volunteered for the Red Shield Appeal from Monday 23 - Sunday 29 May 2022 which was a terrific effort on everyone's behalf.
No doubt stars of the show were Craig Brodey and Daisy his dog.
Who could resist stopping and donating?
Pity we could not take a group photo of the many members who participated on account of the event having been spread out over the week. Apologies if you are not in the photos!
