Thank goodness it’d Fry-day!
Traditionally Friday is known as a day for Fish & Chips for lunch or dinner for many, I can tell you that because my local chippy always has a long queue every Friday night! However, with the current Russia-Ukraine conflict and an embargo on Ukraine Port facilities, which is having a ripple effect on a shortage of sunflower oil in supermarkets and fish and chip shops! This begs many questions including will cod be able to save the Queen over the upcoming jubilee celebrations or will the shortage lead to a chip jumping straight into the fire, I wonder?
Speaking of heat, we hosted our Annual Lunch on a glorious and very warm Tuesday this week and as always it was a great turnout, with many familiar and lots of new faces! Also at Annual Lunch, the CEO of Port of Aberdeen Bob Sanguinetti announced that registrations are now open for our Annual Conference and I am pleased to inform you can book your places by clicking the following link here: BPA Conference 2022.
Speaking of conferences in Scotland, congratulations to Rob Mason and his colleagues at Forth Ports for hosting an excellent Cruise Europe conference in Edinburgh this week. We were delighted to join a really useful conference session and a superb conference dinner in the National Museum of Scotland for s truly memorable event.
Separately, as part of her joint international role, the BPA’s own Rhona Macdonald was slightly further afield at the International Association of Ports and Harbours conference in Vancouver this week! Once she’s over the jet lag we look forward to the debrief, as well as maybe some Canadian maple syrup candy she’s was ordered to return with!

BPA AGM 2022
Alongside this week’s BPA Annual Lunch, we held our 30th Annual General Meeting and published our Annual Report 2021, highlighting the achievements of the Association during the year.
This included electing the new BPA Council and we are also very pleased to welcome Mike Sellers, Port Director Portsmouth International Port, as the new Deputy Chair of the Association, following the retirement of Andy Jones of Milford Haven, earlier this month. Mike joins his fellow officers, Neil Glendinning (Chair), Maurice Bullick (Treasurer) and the BPA’s Eileen Salmon (Association Secretary).
In terms of the BPA Council, which with the officers sets the Association’s strategy and direction, the following will oversee our work for the Association Period or 2022-24:

Ambitious Agenda for all Ports
If you hadn’t see that it was our Annual Lunch this week then you really need this weekend break. Whether you were there or not you may have missed the BPA’s new report on “levelling-up” coastal communities with an ambitious agenda for all ports.
The BPA has been supportive of the Freeports programme but we want to see a more ambitious and wider policy approach for all ports.
This short paper sets out our views on how this can be achieved, including by expanding Freeport mechanisms, such as business rates relief and enhanced capital allowances to all ports around the UK. A wider package of support covering port connectivity, planning, regulation, safety, modal shift and energy are all included.
This essentially will underline much of our lobbying asks and we would encourage all our members and partners to use it.

Maritime Innovation Week
We are pleased to be supporting the first Maritime Innovation Week! The week’s event will take place between 13-16 June 2022, in Newcastle and London, organised by the Innovation Hub in Tyne.
The themes include:

• Fit for the Future
• Investing in Maritime’s Digital Future
• Learning from the Cutting Edge
