Listen to Women

In light of the news coming out of the Supreme Court, we've decided to join fellow podcasters to uplift pro-choice content and support movements that are fighting for abortion rights.
We've joined the Listen to Women coalition to launch a merch campaign with all of the proceeds going toward the National Network of Abortion Funds, which helps to remove financial, logistical, cultural, and political barriers to abortion access. The network makes it easy to donate to an array of organizations all over the country, taking your payment and splitting it evenly among the states that need it most.
We’d also like to acknowledge that the decision to strike down Roe does not just affect women, but all people able to conceive. If you agree, please support abortion rights and buy a shirt to wear to the next rally, to register voters, and to rock the polls in November.

  • Podcast production agency Quill has launched CoHost, a new podcast platform offering a suite of tools all geared towards making it easier for creators to publish, measure, and grow their show. The company also published the 2022 Podcaster Insights Survey, which details challenges creators face, what they look for in a hosting platform, and common monetization strategies. Take advantage of CoHost's 30-day risk-free trial and learn more about its approach.
  • Take part in Ossa Collective's 'Pass the Mic' event, the first of a series of virtual roundtables to promote dialogue about diversity and inclusion in the podcast industry. Attendees will have the opportunity to hear from special guests and industry leaders about strategies to foster an inclusive workplace culture while collectively working towards a more progressive industry.
  • This week, Shreya Sharma, writer of Inside Podcasting newsletter, launched a new spotlight series — BIPOC Women Entrepreneurs in Podcasting. Shreya aims to shed light on whether the talk of DEI in the industry is just 'noise', as well as empower more women of color to take up space.
  • In last week's issue we published a list of online communities to join and received tons of feedback (thank you for those of you who wrote in!). As a follow-up, here's two more:
    • MIC's Podcast Club is a community offering support for creators from all over the globe, from hobby podcasters, experienced indies, and pro producers. The Club meets virtually every month for a community discussion and live Q&A. Join for free to learn and share tips for podcasting success.
    • Kids Listen is a non-profit advocacy organization and a community for makers of podcasts for kids. The group helps creators to connect, learn from, and support each other. They also conduct research focusing on young listeners and their families, and have a children-focused listening app. Members are considered by application and pay a yearly fee.

What We're Listening To

From Us: Many high-achieving individuals deal with the constant stress of being all things to all people. In the latest episode of How to Talk to [High Achievers] about Anything, Stevon sits down with Georgie-Ann, a natural-born leader and problem-solver who always steps up to the plate anytime an issue arises. Stevon offers tips for letting go of the desire to control and oversee all things.

From Other Folks: We're amplifying AAPI voices for Asian-American Pacific Islander Heritage Month. Hosted by Karen Zheng, Mx. Asian American examines the Asian American experience in the US. Entrepreneurs and creators share their lived-experiences as it relates to topics on culture, politics, food, mental health, and more.
From Other Folks: The weekly news podcast The Fifth Column made its debut on Substack last week. Veteran journalists and hosts Kmele Foster (Freethink), Michael Moynihan (Vice), and Matt Welch (Reason) talk, laugh, and drink their way through a variety of news topics that range from the latest bills passing through Congress to celebrity awards parties. Each week they interrogate their guests to offer listeners lively debate and encourage them to question just about everything. Tune in for thought-provoking analysis, commentary, and sedition.

Overheard on Podcasting, Seriously Live

This week on Podcasting, Seriously Live on Twitter Spaces, we had a live Q&A with our CEO, Juleyka Lantigua. Some takeaways are:

  • Tap into resources from AIR, Podnews, Sounds Profitable, and others to brush up on your skills, learn about the industry, and find ways to grow your show.
  • Constructive criticism is good for creators. Receiving honest feedback will help you improve your show and learn more about what resonates with your audience.
  • To pitch your idea to a network, sponsor, or larger media organization, make sure you do your research and have data to back it up, prepare a deck that details the show's concept, and consider creating a pilot to show your idea in action.

Creator Spotlight

Haya PanjwaniHaya Panjwani (she/her) is a journalist at Houston Public Media and LWC Studios' new social media associate editor. She recently graduated from the University of Houston with degrees in political science and journalism. Growing up, Haya saw a gap in local and state news coverage, where politics usually were written about with no explanation for the average person. Since, she has made it her priority to write and report on politics in a way that makes sense for every news consumer, regardless of familiarity. When she is not working on an audio reporting piece or playing on Canva, Haya is likely playing with her dog, Goofy, watching the Great British Bake Off or theorizing what's next in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
