The 2022-2023 Presbyterian Women/Horizons Bible Study

Celebrating Sabbath: Accepting God’s Gift of Rest and Delight
Stony Point Center June 16-18, 2022
Led by the Author, Rev. Dr. Carol Bechtel

In this Bible study—with passages from Genesis, Exodus, Deuteronomy, Isaiah, Matthew, Luke, and Acts—we’ll consider Sabbath:
as a celebration, not a day of dreary formality
as God’s intent for all of creation that includes busy women too
as one day of the week, perhaps a Sunday
as a time to surrender unhealthy striving and frantic busyness, and instead trust that God will provide
as a reminder that life is precious and working too much is against God’s plans for our precious lives
as a day devoted to community and justice and not exclusively to self-care.
Ultimately, Sabbath reminds us to honor God who honors us by giving us a day each week to reset our pace, our priorities, and our lives.

The Reverend Dr. Carol Bechtel is professor of Old Testament at Western Theological Seminary in Holland, MI. She grew up on a farm in Illinois, attended Hope College, Western Theological Seminary and Yale University. She has published a commentary on Esther, and many will remember her PW Bible Study Above and Beyond: Hearing God’s Call in Jonah and Ruth. Carol lives in Holland, Michigan. She and her husband have four children and eight grandchildren. Her hobbies include singing, cooking and gardening, and playing the Celtic harp.

Here is the Conference Registration Form

The Rev. Thomas Fitch Kepler, MDiv, ThM
November 16, 1933-April 30, 2022

The Reverend Thomas Fitch Kepler died peacefully asleep next to his beloved wife of 64 years, the Reverend Patricia Budd Kepler, on April 30, 2022, after having led a long, varied, and full life.  All who knew him will remember his deep devotion to the cause of peace, to “take care of the lame, the halt, and the blind”. They will remember both his gentleness to others and his fiery opposition to injustice.  They will remember his sharp wit, penetrating intellect, and extraordinary command of the English language.  They will remember his rich baritone voice, singing hymns, folk songs, or oratorios, as well as delivering sermons.  Tom was in later years especially committed to Palestinian liberation and peace in the Middle East.  He will be deeply missed by his family, friends and his church.

Among those who will remember him most dearly are his three sons and their wives: Thomas Kepler and Grace Martinelli Kepler, James Kepler and Lisa Kepler, John Kepler and Martha Erickson; his grandchildren Lenora, Kieran and his wife Alyssa, Manda and her husband Brian, Alana, April, James, Aly and her partner Jake; and his two great-grandchildren, Adalyn and Atlas; his brother William and his wife LuEllen; and all of his nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, and grand-nephews.

The son of missionary parents, he was a faithful and active member of Boston Presbytery for close to 50 years and Pastor Emeritus of Clarendon Hill Presbyterian Church in Somerville, MA.

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, September 10th at Clarendon Hill Presbyterian Church.

Shelby Ann Dickinson
1992-2022

Shelby Ann Dickinson, 30, died on May 16, 2022. Shelby died suddenly at home of a brain aneurysm, leaving behind her beloved husband Jeremy Vermilyea and two beautiful daughters, Josephine (2 ½ years) and Eleanor (5 weeks). She is the daughter of Scott and Jennifer Dickinson of Clinton, MA and daughter-in-law of Gerald and Grace Vermilyea of Averill Park, NY. She is also survived by her brother David Dickinson, his wife Devin, nieces Miriam and Lorraine; her paternal grandparents Frieda and David Dickinson; second mom Sue Smethurst; sisters Katie and Amanda Smethurst; as well as many beloved extended family and friends. Shelby was an amazing mother, wife, daughter, sister, social worker, and friend.

She touched hundreds of lives through her career as a hospice social worker. She shed light on the world wherever she went and made it her mission to help others through their grief. She was passionately involved with her church, volunteering, social advocacy, and multiple mom groups and book clubs. She is a talented artist who loved painting, printmaking, knitting, and gardening. Her favorite place was beside the ocean, and a memorial bench will stand beside the sea in her name in Harpswell. She is an inspiration for love, an accepting ally, and sought to make all around her feel that they truly belonged. Shelby’s mission in life was to always “Seek the Joy.” We ask you to honor her memory by seeking joy in life each day.

A celebration of her life will be held at North Yarmouth Congregational Church in North Yarmouth, on May 28 at 11:00 am. Memories and condolences can be shared at http://www.brackettfh.com. The family asks in lieu flowers, contributions be made to a gofundme account (https://gofund.me/06d39b56) which will be used for the family’s immediate and future needs
