Inaugural Lecture Richard Jaspers
You are warmly invited to Richard Jaspers's inaugural lecture Ik beweeg, dus ik ben. Richard Jaspers was in 2021 appointed professor of Molecular and Translational Exercise Physiology. As head of the Myology Laboratory, professor Jaspers has extensive expertise in both basic and applied research on musculoskeletal tissue function and adaptation. His research spans multiple biological levels, from cell to organ to the whole body and translates mechanistic insights into strategies to improve movement performance in rehabilitation and sport. Date: June 24, 2022, time 15:45 hrs. Venue: Aula, Main Building, VU.
'Academic Workplace' on amputation prevention granted

Jaap van Netten and Sicco Bus (both Rehabilitation AMC) have been awarded a grant from ZonMw to setup an “Academic Workplace”. The Academic Workplace is called HOMELAND and focuses on reducing the number of amputations in people with diabetes and other neuropathies,

by improving device care in the user's home situation. An Academic Workplace is a large and broad partnership of parties from different sectors that jointly set up a sustainable research and knowledge infrastructure. The term is 6 years and the grant is €574,345. CLICK to read on.
Marike van der Schaaf awarded grants by ZonMw and SIA RAAK

Marike van der Schaaf (Rehabilitation AMC & HvA) and collaborators have been awarded a ZonMw grant of €300.000 for the project The Integrated TRansmural Allied health Care model: iTRAC. The aim of this four year project is to develop an integrated transmural allied health model of care (iTRAC) for hospitalized patient groups in which functional decline, physical and cognitive impairments and malnutrition are highly prevalent, i.e. patients admitted to the Intensive Care Unit, Internal Medicine, and Oncologic Surgical departments. Click to read on.

The second grant awarded to Marike van der Schaaf and collaborators is a grant of €300.000 given by the Regie orgaan SIA RAAK for two year the project Samen Beter worden met artificiële intelligentie. The aim of this project is to investigate the interaction between diet and exercise. In addition the researchers will set up an infrastructure for the collection of real time monitoring physical activity data as part of daily care. Link to vacancy. Click to read on.

CAD 600,000 for C-BiLLT

Joke Geytenbeek, (Rehabilitation VUmc), BJ Cunningham (Western University, Canada), Tom Chau (Holland Bloorview kids Rehabilitation Hospital, Toronto) and project members of CAN-Child have received a grant from the CIHR (equivalent to the Dutch ZONmw) of $600,000 Canadian dollars for a period of four years for the implementation of the North American/ Canadian version of the C-BiLLT.

ZonMw grant: Improving primary care rehabilitation for trauma patients

Raymond Ostelo (PI) (fac.of Science, VU), and collaborators have been awarded a ZonMW grant of €300.000 for the project Improving primary care rehabilitation for trauma patients. In this project the researchers aim to improve the integrated care of healthcare professionals for older adults following hospital admission due to a trauma. Within the project they build on two current projects, Transmural Trauma Care Model (TTCM) and the Revolving Door project (Draaideur project). For older adults the researchers aim to add screening and treatment of frailty to the current transmural trauma care chain to avoid deterioration of their independency and recurrent acute hospitalization due to increase in frailty. To do so, they need to improve the collaboration between the healthcare professionals in primary care. Click  to read on.

VUmc - AMS investment call

There were five applications for this year's Investment round. The proposals were judged by a group of senior AMS researchers, who advised the AMS MT on their decision. There were two applications that stood out, and the MT decided to award both.

Professor dr.
Carel Meskers (Rehabilitation VUmc) submitted a proposal for a Shoulder- Elbow Perturbator (SEP) (€40.000), a 2-degrees-of-freedom robot manipulator for the upper extremity which allows for instrumented assessment of passive and active neuromechanical properties of the upper extremity under various well controlled task conditions. The pertubator can be used for various translational research lines, primarily those focused on stroke, MS, Cerebral Palsy, spasticity and ageing. In addition the SEP offers a strategic partnership with TU Delft, where it is already in use as part of a VENI grant given to dr. M.L. van de Ruit / Prof.dr. R. Selles.

Secondly, the MT decided to finance the proposal submitted by professor dr. Ronald van Vollenhoven (Rheumatology AMC) for the purchase of a FLIR T 560 thermograph with lenses (€34.000). The thermograph allows for detailed (patho)physiological imaging of the body surface temperature by recording infrared radiation. It is a non-toxic, non-invasive and non- ionizing imaging modality that can detect small differences in temperature (up to 0.01 degrees centigrade). The proposal was prioritized from a strategic point of view as the purchase opens for new collaboration within AMS; collaborations are possible on oral infections with the department of Endodontology, ACTA, and within the department of Human Movement Sciences on the topics of heat strain in both athletes and the elderly. In addition collaboration should also be possible on the topic of the diabetic foot.
One of the proposals will be financed from the annual investment budget, the other from the AMS reserves. See also the

Dare-to-Dream Grants available for PhD candidates
AMS is delighted to announce that there are 10 grants available for keen PhD candidates who want to spend some time at another university (hospital) either in the Netherlands or abroad. The plan you submit can be for various activities, and research must be part of it.

The applications should include:
  • a visit to a university (hospital or lab) of your choice in the Netherlands or abroad;
  • initiate new collaboration in the Netherlands or abroad;
  • write a protocol;
  • set up a new technique;
  • take a course (in the Netherlands or abroad) to learn a new technique or research skill;
  • NOTE: the applicant must be a registered AMS PhD candidate;
Each AMS research program has 2 grants on offer, each of max. €5.000. If you want to apply, be explicit about what your aim is, the budget needed, and what the added benefit of your proposal is to the research institute and the research program. Note the deadline of September 15, 2022. More information and application form on the AMS website.

AMS Activities

Workshop RNA-seq analysis using the Amsterdam UMC core facilities: from the test-tube to functional interpretation
This workshop for AMS members will cover how a typical RNA-seq project flows through the available Core Facilities at Amsterdam UMC; from experimental design, sequencing and pre-processing up to the interpretation. More information. Date: June 30, 2022, 15:30 - 17:30. Registration.
Save-the-Date: Workshop on sex, gender and intersectionality in health (care) research
You are warmly invited to the the interactive workshop on Sex, gender, and intersectionality in health (care) research, please find the details below.

Sex and gender differences in epidemiology, presentation, diagnosis and treatment of diseases occur across populations and contexts. Considering such differences in research increases the validity of findings, and ultimately contributes to more tailored programs and policies. For that reason, funders, journals and the general public increasingly demand the inclusion of the sex and gender, or ‘the gender dimension’ in projects. Beyond the gender dimension, other aspects of identity such as class, ethnicity, or age, interact with and color each other. More information.

AMS PhD Day

On May 21, the AMS PhD committee organized a PhD afternoon filled with activities which concluded with drinks at the Cafe de Bosbaan in Amsterdam. The workshop Communicating based on your personality traits, was a definite success. A piece of advice to AMS PhD candidates: if you participate actively in the AMS activities, you will benefit more from the AMS community and network.

Grant Writing Workshop

Last month the ECR committee organized a well visited grant writing workshop for young researchers in the orientation phase for whether to submit a VENI / ERC / Rubicon grant proposal. Receiving feedback on your research proposal from either grants advisors or senior researchers is invaluable and can make the difference between a go / no-go decision.
The next ECR event will be planned for this autumn, to stay updated, keep an eye on your mail and the newsletters.
