ECF Weekly Bulletin

Red Kite Teaching School Hub Full Induction Programme

Cohort 1.2; Week 18: 23rd May 2022

Welcome to your weekly bulletin of news and information about the Early Career Framework (ECF) programme for ECTs, mentors and ECF Leads. This will land in your inbox every Friday to let you know about the key actions and notifications for the coming week.

Timetabling mentor sessions and ECT time
Please remember when planning timetables for 22-23 to ensure that:
  • ECTs have 10% off timetable in year 1 and 5% in year 2;
  • Mentors have sufficient time to undertake mentor training and hold mentor sessions with their ECT(s). Mentoring sessions are usually expected to be during normal teaching hours.
ECF Leads network event 7th June
There will be an opportunity to discuss all aspects of the ECF full induction programme at our online ECF Lead/Induction Tutor network on Tuesday 7th June at 4pm. We will be discussing the Year 2 delivery model, changes to the DfE portal, and statutory assessment, including formal reviews and QA visits. You can book your place here.

ECT seminar 6
This week we will deliver the ECT seminar 6. You should have been sent a Zoom link; please let us know if you are unable to attend.

Case studies
We are keen to collect case studies from our partnership of schools to show how the ECF programme has been successfully implemented. We are particularly eager to hear from primary colleagues about how you have made the ECF work in your school. If you can spare a few minutes to share your experience, please complete this short form.

ECT registration for September
If you have an ECT starting in your school in the autumn term, please let us know by completing this form. Remember you must register new ECTs on the DfE portal and with Red Kite.
Focus for this week:
Summer 1, module 3: What makes classroom practice effective?
Session 5: Questioning
Questioning is an essential part of effective classroom practice and can be utilised throughout lessons for many different purposes.
To support you to use questioning effectively, in this session you will explore:
  • Why is questioning important?
  • Questioning to assess understanding
  • Extending and challenging pupils
Mentor discussion focus Within the session ECTs are asked to consider an upcoming lesson and explicitly plan the questions they will ask pupils and at which points. The focus of this interaction should be a discussion around this activity and the quality of the questions they plan to ask, as outlined in the mentor handbook pages 63-64.
Plan and practice Work with your ECT and support them to improve an aspect of their planned questions within an upcoming lesson.
DfE portal
The DfE will email all schools this half term to ask if you have ECTs starting in September, which ECF route and provider you will use if you do and they will collect the email address of your Induction Tutor. Please select Teach First as the Lead provider if you want to access our programme. A link to the DfE portal will then be sent to the Induction Tutor; they will be invited to submit ECT and mentor details on the portal, and indicate which Appropriate Body you will use. This will need to be done for ECTs that are newly qualified and those that have already started their induction elsewhere (since Sept 2021). You do not need to re-register ECTs for year 2 of the programme if they were at your school for year 1. Please take care to be accurate and detailed in responses on the DfE portal, as delays with this data has been significant in problems with accessing Brightspace for current ECTs and mentors.
Red Kite Appropriate Body
As most of the schools on the Red Kite ECF programme have also signed up to the Red Kite Appropriate Body to assess the ECT's statutory induction, we will share information in this bulletin on AB milestones. If you are using a different Appropriate Body, the requirements may be slightly different.
  • At the end of this term is the Formal Review where Induction Tutors are asked to comment on the ECT's performance against each Teaching Standard. Induction Tutors need to ensure processes are in place to provide a wide range of evidence, including discussions with the mentor, pupil discussions, book scrutiny and learning walk/ observations to make accurate judgements. A blank form can be found on our resource section on ECT Manager.
