The weekly summary of tech policy and politics from Taso Advisory
Issue 52 / 20 May 2022
Stories this week (it was a quiet one)

Online Safety Bill Committee established (link)

The Public Bill Committee responsible for going through the Online Safety Bill line by line has been established. There's no one on the Committee who's going to cause any fireworks, apart from perhaps Maria Miller, a longstanding tech critic.

Loot boxes and gambling (link)

Lord Foster secured a debate on regulating loot boxes as a form of gambling. In a show of bracing honesty, Baroness Fookes, a Conservative Life Peer, asked what a loot box was. No, seriously.

Human rights and the Online Safety Bill (link)

The Joint Committee on Human Rights wrote to Nadine Dorries on the Online Safety Bill. You'll be surprised to hear that they think there are some quite serious risks. No doubt we'll be told that they don't know what they're talking about.
 Next week in Parliament

On Monday the Fraud Act 2006 and Digital Fraud Committee will take oral evidence.

On Wednesday, the Product Security and Telecommunications Infrastructure Bill will continue through the Commons. Jonathan Gullis has a Westminster Hall debate on the potential merits of a video games enterprise zone.

On Thursday, we have DCMS Oral Questions (woo!). The Fraud Act 2006 and Digital Fraud Committee will take more oral evidence.

Political risk reports

We've just completed several commissions to provide political risk reports to both tech companies and investors, helping them to figure out what's going on and what it means. If you think that might be useful for you, let us know.
