New Restaurant Opens Today at ND Heritage Center & State Museum 

We are excited to welcome El Coqui, a Bismarck-based authentic Puerto Rican bakery, opening today, Monday, June 13, in the James River Café at the ND Heritage Center & State Museum.

The menu will include coffee, sandwiches, cookies, salads, hot meals, and pizzas, plus freshly baked bread and pastries from the El Coqui downtown location.

Café hours are Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m., and Saturday-Sunday, 10 a.m.-3:30 p.m. 


Troubadours From the North
North Dakota History, Vol. 62, No. 3, Summer 1995

In this presentation by North Dakota Poet Laureate Larry Woiwode (1942-2022), we learn how family, language, and the "voice from the North" shaped the world and writings of one of the state’s most successful authors. Included are excerpts from some of Woiwode’s writings.

History Award Nominations Sought

Nominations are sought for the annual awards program recognizing outstanding achievement in three categories of history: Excellence in Local History, Heritage Profile Honor, and North Dakota Person of History. Submissions must be delivered or postmarked by July 8 at 5 p.m.

Tell Us Your 1997 Flood Stories!

Share your personal memories of the 1997 flood with the State Archives as part of the oral history project “Flicker Tales of North Dakota.” Archives staff will record participants’ stories during 20-minute sessions held virtually or by telephone. Recording sessions will take place June 15-30, and time slots are limited.

Archaeologists Document Sites With Drones

Staff from the State Historical Society’s Archaeology & Historic Preservation Department recently did fieldwork in the White Earth River Valley located in Mountrail County. Research Archaeologists Amy Bleier and Timothy Reed joined Chief Archaeologist Andy Clark and Agency Director Bill Peterson for two days of documenting stone feature sites using unmanned aerial vehicles (drones). A detailed analysis of the images collected is ongoing.

Attend the Dakota Buffalo Symposium 

The Dakota Bison Symposium, June 23-25, will explore the historical and contemporary importance of American bison through presentations, conversations, film, art, tours, exhibits, music, and dance. The symposium is a partnership between the State Historical Society and Bismarck State College and will be held at the ND Heritage Center & State Museum in Bismarck.

Stay at the Totten Trail Historic Inn

On the Edge of the Wind: A New State Museum Exhibit in the Making 
 
On the Edge of the Wind: Sacred Land, Mythic Tales is an exhibition scheduled to open at the ND Heritage Center & State Museum in March 2023. Museum staff are working in partnership with the ND Council on the Arts and North Dakota’s state folklorist Troyd Geist to create an exhibit with a focus on traditional stories that provide an understanding of sacred sites and oral traditions of tribal cultures.
