Fire Damages Home in Elgin

1100 Hundred Block of Bellevue Avenue

Elgin, IL – On Friday, May 20 just before 7:30 a.m., members of the Elgin Fire Department responded to the eleven hundred block of Bellevue Ave. for a report of a possible house fire.
 
Responding fire companies arrived within four minutes of dispatch and found smoke throughout the home with heavy fire in the basement. Fire was extending to the side of the home and attic.  While battling the blaze, crews rescued one cat that is currently in good condition at a local animal hospital.  Damage from the fire was estimated at approximately $200,000.
 
There were no civilian injuries due to the fire. One firefighter was treated on the scene for heat exhaustion before returning to work. The fire is currently under investigation by the Elgin Fire Department Fire Investigation Team.

Make sure you have properly installed and maintained smoke detectors in your home and/or business. Smoke detectors are the first line of defense during a fire event. Test smoke detectors each month and make a habit of changing the batteries twice a year, like when you change your clocks.
