On Saturday, May 28th, Philly Typewriter will be filling the East Room with typewriters as we explore the Quaker habit of taking minutes. Drop in throughout the afternoon to learn about typewriters and how their technology was such an improvement over handwritten notes!
This workshop is FREE, and registration is not required.
The Society of Friends is unique in that they take minutes, which are notes of discussions and conversations that occur during meetings and worship. When ASMH was first built in the early 1800s, everything was handwritten by the Clerk– a time-consuming and laborious process. The invention and popularity of the typewriter sped up the process considerably! Come test out your skills on various typewriters while you view some examples of how Quakers have communicated through writing over time.
Support provided by the Philadelphia Cultural Fund.
