ANNOUNCEMENT:

June Typewriter Raffle!

To celebrate Pride Month this upcoming June, we restored this Royal Model O and customized it in-house to have this beautiful rainbow keyboard. It gleams and glistens in all the right places. And not only do those keytops provide a burst of color, but this machine is even set up with a purple ribbon, adding vibrancy to all that it types.

And the best part? This stunning Pride Typewriter could be YOURS!

Starting June 1st, and through the end of the month, we will be hosting a raffle for this machine. A single raffle ticket will be $5, and all proceeds will be donated to an LGBTQ+ led and focused organization. We will announce the organization and more details about the raffle once June comes, but we just couldn’t hold off on showing you this machine. Make sure to follow us on Instagram and Facebook to be up to date on all of the details that come in!

And let’s get a close up of those keytops, shall we?

Stay tuned for June so you can enter for your chance to win this machine!

Philly Tech Week

Philly Tech Week was a success! The 12th annual Philly Tech Week Presented by Comcast offered a mix of in-person and virtual events running from May 6-14. It showcased technology, entrepreneurship, and innovation in the Philadelphia region. We were part of the Signature Event and had the opportunity to showcase the more historical aspect of technology with our beloved typewriters, the original tech. It was so surreal having our typewriters be lined up next to some of the most innovative tech out there right now, and we loved being a part of it. Thank you to all who came out to this event! Philly Typewriter at Arch Street Meeting House

On Saturday, May 28th, Philly Typewriter will be filling the East Room with typewriters as we explore the Quaker habit of taking minutes. Drop in throughout the afternoon to learn about typewriters and how their technology was such an improvement over handwritten notes!

This workshop is FREE, and registration is not required.

The Society of Friends is unique in that they take minutes, which are notes of discussions and conversations that occur during meetings and worship. When ASMH was first built in the early 1800s, everything was handwritten by the Clerk– a time-consuming and laborious process. The invention and popularity of the typewriter sped up the process considerably! Come test out your skills on various typewriters while you view some examples of how Quakers have communicated through writing over time.

Support provided by the Philadelphia Cultural Fund.

Updates on our Showroom

When we first entered the pandemic, we had to change how we operated as a business. For a while, how our showroom functioned was that someone would come in, find their perfect machine, and then, once it was chosen, we would restore it. However, we are pivoting again! We are currently in the process of rebuilding and reformatting the way our showroom functions so that instead of restoring after the typewriter selection is made, we’ll be restoring before. This will make it so that you can come in the shop and leave that same day with the typewriter of your dreams.

As always, call ahead to see what available stock we have, and we’ll be happy to set up an appointment for you to check them out!

As always, thank you so much for your continued support of Philly Typewriter. It really means the world to us. We hope to see you in the shop soon!
