We are continuing our Ministry Spotlight! This is where we highlight the key 2021 accomplishments of my ministry, the Ministry of Advanced Education and Skills Education.
Tuition Fee Limit Policy

My ministry's highest priority is ensuring that people can access and be successful in their post-secondary training and education. These investments will build a strong and resilient workforce that is ready for any challenges.

We continue to maintain a 2% cap on tuition and mandatory fees annually. Undergraduate tuition in B.C. is $584 less than the Canadian average. Statistics Canada shows that B.C. has the fourth-lowest undergraduate tuition in the country -- lower than Alberta, Ontario, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Islan, Saskatchewan.

My Ministry remains committed to helping students by removing barriers to education by funding initiatives and programs to empower Indigenous students to access post-secondary education.

Here are some things I'd like to share with you from the past week:
Recently, my Constituency Assistants, Nick and Tyler, attended the announcement to begin construction on the new Burnaby Hospital! The redevelopment is expected to cost more than $1.3 billion, making it among the province’s largest healthcare investments. I am so excited for Burnaby residents to have access to two new state-of-the-art patient-care towers, a bigger ER & a new cancer treatment centre.

Upgrading the Burnaby Hospital will make a real difference for the people of Burnaby!

Government launches preparedness plan for heat events, a heat alert

Last summer’s unprecedented heat dome tragically resulted in hundreds of fatalities, making it clear that we need to do more like a province to be better prepared. That’s why we’re launching the new BC Heat Alert and Response System which will send alerts directly to people’s phones during extreme heat emergencies.

We’ve also been making fundamental changes in BC’s ambulance service and are bringing in additional measures to bolster BC’s ambulance system to better respond to a significant increase in 9-1-1 calls during emergencies.

Tahltan Central Government, B.C. make history under Declaration Act

Our government has a rich history of partnerships with the Tahltan Nation. By weaving together our respective government processes, we’re demonstrating the promise of reconciliation, supporting predictability & clarity for business, & encouraging investment in BC.

This historic agreement shifts our governments legal decision-making framework to respect First Nations jurisdiction, recognizing the inherent rights of the Tahltan and providing a clear, stable, and sustainable path for everyone to work together.

BC bid opens to buyers, suppliers, public

People, businesses and public-sector organizations can now view and bid on procurement opportunities on the newly launched BC Bid site, the Province’s online procurement marketplace. The new system will make it easier for companies of all sizes, in every region, to do business with the Province, and will create new jobs for people across B.C.

Planning for change at Hall Towers

BC Housing is in the process of creating a proposed plan to redevelop Hall Towers. Part of the redevelopment would include replacing existing units with new affordable housing options.

BC Housing and City of Burnaby are holding an information session just for Hall Towers tenants on Thursday, June 16th, from 3 to 7 pm. This session will be held in the plaza outside Hall Towers. This will be a chance for you to meet the project team, ask us your questions, and tell your thoughts and ideas for the future of your community. There will be more details about the proposed plan.

You can also find more information at www.letstalkhousingbc.ca/burnaby-kingsway.

Together we will learn what is taking place developmentally, what happens in the brain, and what they are communicating through their behaviour. We will look at practical strategies of how to provide connection and support for our children (and for ourselves) during these challenging times.
