A Rocha UK eNews: July 2022

New farming subsidies may not be Brexit’s environmental silver lining after all…

The UK’s farms are looking seasonally green and pleasant but there’s a battle to be fought. Andy Lester looks behind the veneer.

Act for Nature day at Wolf Fields, and more venues to follow.

Our wasteland-to-wonderland vision for Wolf Fields, our urban reserve in Southall, West London, has always been about seeing nature and people flourish, and inspiring visitors to catch the vision and apply what they learn to their own church spaces and land. On 25 June, Wolf Fields was the venue for our first Act for Nature day. There are more planned in other locations from July to November.

Support A Rocha UK’s Foxearth Meadows - a place for people and nature

It’s a busy time at Foxearth Meadows. This vibrant wetland, teeming with life, is carefully managed by our Reserve Manager, Mark Prina, to help it flourish and grow. Our team of staff and volunteers works hard to make it a home for a growing number of dragonflies and other insects, plants, fungi, mammals, molluscs and birds. The nature reserve benefits people too. Over a thousand visitors a year see firsthand how it is possible to care for God’s creation on a small piece of rural land, and experience the benefits of nature on their doorstep. Your support is vital. We rely on donations from people like you who know the value of our work at Foxearth Meadows - managing a wetland haven for the benefit of nature and people.

Make a difference for nature - fundraise for A Rocha UK

If you’d like to raise funds and have fun at the same time, head over to our ‘fundraise for us’ webpage here for some inspiration and ideas! Regina Ebner, our Partners in Action Coordinator, raised an incredible £900 for A Rocha UK and Adventure Plus (one of our Partners in Action) by canoeing 127 miles from Witney to Westminster. She says, ‘With the ongoing and escalating environmental crisis, we need people and organisations that practically make a difference and find positive solutions more than ever.’

Regina has some great advice for anyone thinking of fundraising to make a difference for people and nature, ‘I recommend that you find something you enjoy, but that can inspire others to give money to a great cause’ she says. Thank you Regina for being a hero for nature! You can read her inspirational fundraising adventure story below.

Get involved in The Great Big Green Week (24 September - 2 October)

The Great Big Green Week is the UK’s biggest call for action on climate change and nature, showing decision makers that people from all walks of life are stepping up to take action - and that we need them to step up too.

Last year over 5000 events took place, with more than 200,000 people showing up for the planet in their community and online. As members of The Climate Coalition, we’re encouraging as many Christians and churches as possible to take part. This can show that we serve a God of Creation and to add our efforts to those of others for the greatest combined impact. Could you or your church host a community event as part of the Great Big Green Week? A litter pick perhaps, some wildlife gardening, or a climate coffee morning -  whatever your idea is - get involved today.

Eco Tip - Ditch disposables. Single-use plastic and single-use styrofoam are sourced from fossil fuels and contribute to climate change. Both materials are also known to contain carcinogens that are harmful to human health; this is particularly true when they are used for hot liquids or food, or microwaved. In a season of picnics and busyness, try to remember to ‘BYOC’ (Bring Your Own Container or Cutlery) for your summer snacks instead of buying disposable items. Think reusable lunch boxes or beeswax wraps. Glass jars are another good option as they are non-toxic, don’t hold on to grease or food smells, and can hold liquids well too (but do mind their temperature with hot liquids).
