JUNE NEWSLETTER 2022

Beacons were flaming if not the weather as June arrived, cake and bubbly feasted on amongst Union jacks at Street parties, flowers filled churches and the pageantry was stupendous in London for the Queen’s jubilee. It felt a real celebration of turning our backs on the pandemic and learning to live with it, reclaiming fun and laughter en masse. Thank goodness!
May was more crazy weather but the skies ever photogenic and of course inspirational flowers everywhere. The workshop is full of rose scents from the garden along with that familiar damp dusty smell of clay that so many of us remember from school, hiding away in the pottery. How lucky I was to have the great Mo Jupp occasionally helping his wife out teaching at our school – he taught me to throw at 14; my mate Tom Stacpoole was the same at his and now potting a bit in Cornwall and Rory who has spent a lifetime with clay was the same age at his school ten years earlier. He is an expert thrower of extreme skill with the accuracy of an engineer and so valued in the pottery in Fitzhead. Look out for your own 14 year olds and see if they take to pottery or maybe you were one too? The Throwdown on TV has inspired a whole new generation.
This last month my mother has come to live with me to convalesce and so enjoys the busy comings and goings of the pottery. Clayey aprons and a lot of mugs of tea and coffee, hasty soup lunches and customers popping by are watched in turn avidly and dreamily as she is lost in yet another good book with cats snoozing on her lap. She fits in very well and we savour the days now she is out of hospital.
Recent orders includes these crab tiles which will look super in a seaside kitchen and several named and dated wedding presents alongside the Kinlochewe fishing prizes: these are a hilarious annual catalogue of whacky Ogle-invented trophies, sadly no longer featuring salmon and in fact fewer brown trout in Wester Ross, I gather. The pottery is now back on track after a distracting couple of months with the Ukraine fundraiser and family illness. Thank you all for being kind when the usual order was disturbed. Onward and upward and here’s to a lovely Summer ahead,
