Projects Update
Cowalla Road Upgrade Completed

Over six kilometres of Cowalla Road have finally been upgraded. Works involved pavement reconstruction, widening to 10m, sealing, posts and signage, and white line marking.

Most of the road reconstruction was undertaken by the Shire's Operations crew and took approximately four months to complete. Contractors provided traffic control, pulverisation and stabilisation, cartage, sealing and line marking services.

Pictured above: progress photos 19 January to 11 May - what a difference four months make!

New Entry Statement for Gingin

The Shire Operations team installed a colourful, welcoming new entry statement at the Dewar Road entrance to Gingin off Brand Highway. It features heritage-style timber framework, landscaping, and replaced the previous sign which was old and deteriorating. Well done to our staff for an excellent job.

Grading Works in Progress

Please be advised that our Operations team are currently working through their Maintenance Grading Schedule for gravel roads within the Shire. These works will take several months to complete, depending on weather conditions, and may require road users to slow down and exercise caution when approaching graders at work and any other modified road conditions.

In the meantime, please take care on our roads and thank you for your patience.
Community Events

Volunteers' Event Guilderton

On Sunday 15 May 2022, to kick off National Volunteer Week, the Festival of Small Halls Music Appreciation Concert was held at the Guilderton Community Hall. 70 members of the community enjoyed an intimate evening of soulful live music, along with a delicious supper provided by the Guilderton Country Club.

Local Moore River talent Savanah Solomon kicked off the evening with her acoustic folk original songs. Her song “Rainbow”, which tells the story of losing someone to suicide, was a particularly touching message of hope.

Savanah was followed by Jack Davies of the indie-folk rock band Jack Davies & The Bush Chooks. Jack entertained the crowd with amusing preludes to his unique original songs which explore the mundane and sorrowful moments of life, while finding moments of joy in the middle. Jack even used the old piano that lives at the hall in his set.

The event was made possible by the generous support of Regional Arts WA, the Festival of Small Halls Australia (Woodfordia) and the Shire of Gingin.

Thank you to all of the volunteers within the Shire who do so much for the community.

Seniors' Movie Matinee

On Thursday 26 May, approximately 20 of our senior community members came together to enjoy a day of socialising and were taken back in time to watch a classic 1950s comedy 'Gentlemen Prefer Blondes'. The seniors were treated with movie snacks, drinks and a lovely light lunch provided by the Guilderton Country Club. There was even a raffle put on with local produce as the prize and Anne Stroud was the lucky winner.

The movie matinee was held in lieu of the Seniors Week event that usually runs in November each year. However, due to Covid-19 restrictions, this event could not take place at that time. So it was great to finally organise an event for our seniors. All going well we will endeavor to hold another event for Seniors' Week in November.

Do You Have a Community Event to Promote in the Shire?

If so, please email cdo@gingin.wa.gov.au and we will include it in
our Events Calendar on the Shire's website

General News & Information
Farewell Cr Jan Court!
After 11 years of dedicated service to the Shire of Gingin Council, we said farewell to Cr Jan Court who attended her last Council meeting on 17 May, after announcing her retirement.

During her time as a councillor, which commenced back in 2011, Jan was committed to improving health outcomes and resources for Shire residents, passionately advocated arts and culture for our region, and was instrumental in the development of the Wangaree Community Centre which is home to the Lancelin hub for DADAA.

Jan is leaving her long-time home in Lancelin to start the next chapter of her life down south in Vasse. She will be very much missed, but we wish her every happiness and thank her sincerely for her contribution to the Shire of Gingin.

Jan’s retirement has left a vacant position on Council which will be filled at the next Local Government election in October 2023.

Meet Ranger Colby

Meet our trainee Ranger 'Colby'. He has been patrolling with Ranger Rachael around the Shire helping to educate dogs and their owners about the importance of registration, microchipping, and where dogs can run off-lead. He has also been testing all the local off and on-lead dog exercise areas. Colby is an Australian Shepherd who loves meeting people, so if you see Ranger Rachael and Colby out and about, please come and say hello.

Ranger Services are here to help, so give us a call on 9575 5140 or 9575 5172 if there's anything we can assist you with.

Rainwater Tank Care & Maintenance

Water tanks are a vital resource on properties in rural areas where scheme drinking water is not available. Water Tanks on Your Property provides a range of tips about careful collection and storage of water to mare sure the water is safe to drink.
Each year, homeowners should allow the first good rains to rinse the roof and gutters and run to waste by using a first-flush diversion device. Using a first-flush diversion device will prevent the first portion of roof runoff, which is likely to collect contamination from entering the tank. Learn more here.

Managing Wastewater Overflows

Wastewater overflows can occur from blocked sewerage pipes caused by tree roots, accumulation of fats or objects, or from the failure or inadequate maintenance and servicing of onsite sewage systems such as septic tanks and leach drains.

To help manage and navigate the clean up of overflows refer to Domestic Wastewater Overflows.  The Wastewater Overflow Notification and Response Procedures 2021 are to be used by state government agencies, local governments and wastewater service providers for wastewater overflow events which occur either into/onto built, land and water environments within WA.
Lancelin Hall Bookings

The Shire of Gingin has recently taken over bookings for the Lancelin Hall.
If you would like to use the Lancelin Hall, please contact the Lancelin Shire Office on 9575 5155 to make a booking.
