Hello Hazelwood Friends!

There’s a one-season show on Netflix called The Beauty and the Baker. While I do not really like the title, it caught my attention because the female lead character’s name is Noa, which is a Biblical name. So, I have watched several episodes and I’m telling ya, this show is ALL about change.

The lead male character, Daniel, is navigating the world of his new girlfriend, Noa, who happens to be a very popular celebrity, and his family suddenly has to navigate being thrown into the spotlight along with their son… as well as how to manage the family bakery when Daniel is out of town so much now. But the show is about much more than the relationship between the two main characters, as there are storylines of big change for Daniel’s sister, who comes out to her family and now has her first girlfriend, as well as for Daniel’s brother, who has finally stood up to his dad about the dreams he has for his future. And there are other characters navigating change as well.

In one episode, the character of the Dad on the show said, “Life is always changing. That’s how we know we are alive.” Wow! I love that! “Life is always changing. That’s how we know we are alive.” Change is part of growth and life. This congregation certainly has seen its share of changes in its history – including changes of locations and even a name change! And change never ends… Now, it may feel like you have been through more changes than your fair share in the last couple of years! But as several wise older folks have reminded me, “we’ve seen change and hard times before and survived it.” And I believe that the Spirit of God gives us the power to not only survive times of change, but also to embrace change, and to thrive in being part of change.

While not one of us would wish this coronavirus on anyone, I think this change in our routines has reminded us of what is really important. Maybe we have realized that the things we complained about in the past were not always worth getting so worked up about. And many of us have learned to embrace new ways of connecting, such as Zoom, that we may have been reluctant to try in the past. As the Body of Christ, I hope we always hold onto thinking about who is NOT in the room, even as things return to some semblance of the past… that is, being mindful of who is NOT able to be as physically mobile or present for a variety of reasons.

But most of all, I hope that this congregation continues to look at life together through a lens of Openness to Change and New Ideas. Like learning to talk as a child, or learning a foreign language, mistakes will most likely happen along the way. But I truly believe the wind and fire of the Spirit enables us to embrace the changes we need to be truly alive for Christ so that we, too, are acting and speaking in ways that are meaningful and relevant to the times in which we live here and now.

If you missed worship this past Sunday, I highly encourage you to check out the sermon at least, as we explored a very important story from the early church during a time of difficulty and dramatic change.

Shoe Collection

Hearts & Hands United Back-to-School Distribution will be on Saturday, August 6, from 10am-2pm at the Fairgrounds Memorial Building. This event is for children who live and attend school in Delaware County. Goals are to provide school supplies and a new pair of shoes for students who are not able to afford them. Each organization that helps has one size, one gender- that way there will be enough shoes in each size to meet the needs.

Hazelwood has been asked to provide 30 new pairs of men's size 9 athletic shoes. We will be collecting now through Sunday, July 31. There is a tote in Sulanke Commons for the donated shoes. Please remove shoes from boxes, tie laces together, and place in the tote. Thanks!

Update on Marianna Gill's mother, Kitty Tilton: "Perhaps my last update on Mom was a little premature. She is continuing the chemo treatments to make sure nothing is hiding, but the treatments are starting to bring her down again in energy and white blood cell count. She cannot go to church or be around a lot of people. She's feeling very weak, and she wants to be able to do things. My family and I appreciate your continued prayers for her."

Garden Update

The Hazelwood Community Garden and its perimeter of marigolds has been planted with the help of Shirley Bookout, Don & Cheryll Crose, Jim Reece, and Glen Sulanke. Ron Smith will render watering expertise, as he has done in previous years. The photos below show portions with cardboard placed to help prevent weeds; after the summer harvest it will transform into compost. Don collected 115 field rocks to help secure the cardboard! A hearty "thank you" to this dedicated crew!
