Welcome to Oh Scrap! from Diane at Stash Bandit:
Tips and tricks for better scrappy quilts!

Thank you for coming to the trunk show at Mangelsen's last Sunday. I enjoyed meeting many new friends and I hope you left with fresh inspiration for scrap quilts.

Here's an important truth about scrap quilts:

If you're working with small patches, you can use allll the fabrics together. My Framework quilt, above, has every imaginable type of print: reproduction, novelty, holiday, batik and many more.

It works because the patches are cut 1-1/2" x 2-1/2". My theory is that the little patches give your eye many opportunities to see and understand the design.

Brick by Brick, designed and made by Diane Harris

Brick by Brick, above, is similar in this way: Every conceivable kind of fabric was used. I simply paired a dark brick with a lighter brick and then rotated every other pair.

The patches were cut 2-1/2" x 4-1/2", which is about the largest I think you can use for a quilt with all the fabrics together. Any larger and you'll need something to serve as "glue." That's a post for another day.
A portion of my Plus and X quilt

I combined everything but the kitchen sink for my Plus and X quilt, above. This may not be everyone's cup of tea, but it was fun to make. Read the quilt's story and the complimentary block instructions right here.

Up next at Mangelsen's is a workshop "Color, Contrast & Cohesion," a perfect follow up to the "Make Extraordinary Scrap Quilts" trunk show. In fact, I added that phrase to the title because it captures what the class is about.

We'll cover many important ideas in this class and we'll get really practical by using your fabrics to learn. When you register, you'll get the patterns for class so you can choose one you like.

The piecing is deliberately very simple so you can focus on the other concepts: color, value, contrast, scale, texture, line and the many ways you can achieve cohesion.

There are six designs from which to choose, and the patterns are all included. Four are shown here: Ring Around the Rainbow, I Spy a Milk Cow, Baby Windmills and The Brick Block. When you register, we'll send you the patterns so you can hit the ground running the day we meet.

The class meets from 10:30 to 4:30 at Mangelsen's in Omaha and the cost is $75, which includes an optional followup session.

Please join me at Mangelsen's on Sunday, June 26 for a day that will boost your confidence, your skills and your fabric savvy!
