ANUAFC Griffin Tale

The long weekend means no footy this week.

On Tuesday morning, the First Quarter Moon occurred as the Sun in Gemini formed a square with the Virgo Moon. There is a crisis theme surrounding any quarter Moon phase, as we feel compelled to take action. This can be a time of stress, clashing, and discord, but also of high energy, motivation, and growth. For many griffos, the long weekend and new moon present an opportunity to shred some pow at Perisher opening weekend or to head down to the coast with your partner and their parents. We hope you enjoy whichever path you choose to take.

We want to support your choice in stepping toward a grounded and mindful weekend. We hope everyone takes the space to rest up and reflect on what we reckon is gonna be a big second half of the season.

Will (never) Back(ers) Down(ers)

By Will Downing

Firstly, i'd like to acknowledge what an honour it was to have the second Sir Douglass Nicols round at south. Huge thanks to Paul House for conducting the welcome to country and smoking ceremony, and to all involved who organised the round.

First Quarter - You. Wouldnt. Read about it.

Holy hell we actually did it! We actually started a game of football off with some intensity! On a day when we needed to be firing on all cylinders against a potential top 4 adversary, the boys put on a show in the first 10 minutes, kicking away to an early 3 goal lead without Googong even having a sniff of the pill.

Skronk was (as usual) dominating up forward and plucking marks with the ease and grace of a labor prime minister winning a federal election in 2022. Sean Griffiths kicked one of the goals of the year from the pocket, using his typical smooth and natural-looking kicking action to slot it through the big sticks. Was i surprised? Yes. Was Sean surprised? Yes. Did mounty end up sleeping in the bathroom on saturday night after he won the seniors mug? Hard to say.

Second Quarter - Spiritual leaders take control.

After getting ahead of ourselves in the later stages of first quarter (we kicked the first 3 goals of the game, leave us alone) we came out hot again in the second off the back of some abusive, demeaning, and downright criminal ruck dominance by Jingle Sleigh Finnigan McRucktap.

Speaking of ruckwork - play of the day came when T-bone Michie, while rukcing at a throw-in deep in griffo goaltown, ran forwards to a shallow throw and passed off to the #36 player (it was Downers) who was SCREAMING towards goal and slotted through a miracle major from an angle tighter than a Aidan Pini's shorts. Panicking, and not knowing how i had just done this thing, i shrugged to the onlooking seniors players on the sideline only to throw a Ginnivan-esque 'shoosh' at them. Imagine shooshing your own supporters after kicking a goal. That has to be at least 2 weeks, even with an early plea.

Third Quarter - Our fortress: the library

The good times kept on rolling in the second half, with Hammer, Rich Davis and Sam Collingwood sucking directly from the teet of Jingles taps - taking on tackles, refusing to handball, and being as selfish as possible to scorunge as many votes as possible. Hammer literally had to come off and get new laces in his boots, such was the torque he was putting through the ground trying to break 8 tackles at once.

Later that quarter, Tuanny was violated. Having put his head down to pick up a loose ball, he was collected high and honestly i dont know how his head stayed attached. Thinking quickly after the low velocity contact, Tuan grabbed his head to keep it from falling off and kept his hands firmly pressed down - indicating to the umpire that he was indeed okay, and that no free kick needed to be payed.

On the 3QT siren the Googong boys got a bit lippy in a bid to arouse some sort of fightback - but instead were treated to a golden comeback by Hammer, who exclaimed "Good vision. Good energy. It’s the education showing!". Even the slow ones laughed.

Fourth Quarter - candy sales are high at the canberra centre

The boys did well to keep the foot down through the whole game, keeping up the pressure in the fourth. This was highlighted by Jono "i agree sir" Dean who had a testipop for the ages when screaming "whaAat!?" at another correct umpiring call from Ben Harris (thanks to Ben for donning the high-vis).

The icing on the cake for me was when thorny (a deserving mug winner) sold candy about 3 times on the wing right in front of the bench only to handball directly to one of his customers and let them run away with it. No wonder the canberra centre is struggling. Yes, Jay Jays are meant to pay YOU to be there, not the other way around. Trust me, I got 64% in a BUSN1001 assingment once.

Other headlines from the game:

- Archie boy snags a sexy snap from 45

- Backline switch actually works and leads to shot on goal

- Downers has 15 shots on goal from outside 50 and kicks 0

- "I deserve this" whispers Chaz as he kicks his second

The Post Game Wrap - Bring me to life

I'm not bitter, but Backers got the voucher for kicking 0.5 (and a bloke in the head who was on the ground) and i kicked 1.0 and didnt get it for the third week in a row? The 25 inside 50s, 10 shots on goal, and 40 posessions dont count. From voucher in the seniors to nothing in the ressies, what a fall from grace its been for Downers. Save me from the nothing ive become.

The Stories We Leave on the Field

By Emma Dunn

Last weekend we had the absolute privilege of playing at home again for the last Indigenous Round game of 2022. These weekends have been such a good opportunity to reflect on and celebrate the beautiful country we live, study, work, and most importantly, play footy on. And the incredible jerseys designed by Richie Allan and Richard Allan Jr, do just that. They tell the story of our home, the club, the creek, the uni, and my favourite part: the footprints.

When I think of Country I think of footprints. I think of the footprints we see in the mud on South and think of the amazing ANU women who paved the way for our team to be what it is today. The footprints of the men’s teams, supporters, and volunteers over the years who have also kept our club running are also a part of South Oval. These footprints join those of the Traditional Custodians and each one tells a story. From stories of resistance, culture and strength, to stories of 3rd, 4th, 5th efforts, of having the backs of your teammates, to leaving it all on the field. This Country has such a rich woven history, a history that we all share and going forward will continue to contribute to. It was a beautiful Saturday morning and we were determined to make sure we were proud of the footprints we left on South.

Our game was a bit of a slow burn. The first half we were missing intensity, marks were going uncontested, and we were being sucked into how they played. We jogged into the sheds just a couple of kicks in front of Queanbeyan, with the score of 2.5.17 to 0.1.1. We knew we needed to come out strong in the second half.

In the third quarter things started to pick up and we got the score to 4.10.34 to 0.1.1. But forth quarter was where we brought the heat. Finally getting the ball between the tall sticks and not the smaller ones to the side, to win the game with 8.12.60 to 0.1.1.

After the game we were privileged to hear from Uncle and participate in a smoking ceremony and later on, wrapped up our celebrations with a few bevs at the Hellenic.

All across the field were stories to be proud of. Gracey flattening a defender early in the game demonstrating the strength we have been working on at training. Greta was everywhere you needed her to be and was an absolute ball magnet. Kylie and Lizzy were a powerhouse duo getting the ball from the midfield to the forwards, and then into the goals. AP had another huge game from kicking a goal to getting knocked out (?). Babs brought confidence and composure for her first game back and even kicked a goal. Iman got a fabulous goal. In the midfield we brought in our structure and really locked in the wall. Ine set the standard for intensity getting into every contest and fighting her way out.

Not the mention the backs (yeah the backs) we keep them to one point the whole game by being accountable, communicating well, and not getting sucked into how their forward line was playing. Shout out to Skye for marking her player completely out of the game. Throughout the game we were just winning the arm wrestle with Quenbeyan but when we were finally fired up, they were absolutely no match.

Anyways what I’m trying to say is, I bloody love footy and I’m bloody proud of the Buzz. Everyone really brought it together for a tough game that held a lot of significance and made their footprints count.

Side note – I was just looking at the team sheets and turns out they also have an Emma Dunn. Stay tuned to find out if Canberra is big enough for two Emma Dunns.

Side, side note – there is still a whole bunch to be done around discrimination in sport, especially with racism and so if you haven’t already, please check out the two docos on Adam Goodes. I’m also happy to recommend heaps more interesting reads/watches so hit me up if keen

Why do you play for the Griffos? To run a longitudinal study of the interaction between logistics and culture in a community football setting
Favourite player to play with? My online friend xx-He@d$h0t_sEx_binLaDen-xx who taught me how to get to round 50 in call of duty zombies
Favourite Griffo on-field moment? Finally laying my first tackle in my 8th year at the club. Sorry to whichever buzzy I took down in lanework - it just all lined up really well.
Favourite Griffo off-field moment? Throwing sausages in the ceiling fan at the bay is a close second to throwing cutlery in the ceiling fan at Wollongong. Wait is that a urinal cake?
Goal for the season? Yeah the one I kicked from 60 off a step against belco was pretty good but it’s too soon to say if that’s gonna be the best for the whole season

A Tale of what I Learned in Footy this Week

By Damo Reynolds

Hello Griffos, I have the honour of writing this week’s Griff tale. I’ll admit, with my limited background in footy and the fact that I haven’t written an essay since high school, the task made me nervous. Each week is essentially a learning process for me. I soak in the wise words of Tuanny, and when I have no idea what’s going on, I scream at my team mates for advice (this often ends up being Harry … sorry Harry). As such, this griff tale is going to be a tale of what I learned this week in footy … and of course how we went on the weekend.

Water Running
We start with another glorious morning on South Oval, and by glorious I mean 5 degrees and mud everywhere (despite not having rained for three days), it’s a fantastic day for footy. I was rostered on to run water for the buzz. It was my first time water running and I thought it would be simple … oh how I was mistaken. Water running is an art form. You need to ‘time your run’ (a crucial concept in footy – Hads does this beautifully) so that you can adequately deliver water without getting caught in the line of play. This becomes tricky as it is hard to judge how much water the griffos will want, and how rapidly the play will change. With the buzz’s lightning ball movement it is very easy to get stuck in the middle of the ground with water bottles everywhere as the ball comes flying your way. Stressful stuff. Lucky for me we had two other griffos well trained in the art of water running on that game … so I barely had to do anything. The topic of water running brings me to our own water runner in the Seniors game, Shaun, and his classy act in the 4th. More on that later.

The buzz had a fantastic win against the Richmond Tigers wait sorry the Queanbeyan Tigers (another thing I learnt – clubs naming and kitting themselves after AFL clubs) getting up 60 to 1.

Welcome to Country
After the buzz’s game, as part of the National Reconciliation Week the club received a welcome to country from Elder Paul House. This welcome to the Ngunnawal land of the traditional custodians of this area involved a speech reminding us of whose country we’re playing on, a didgeridoo performance and a smoking ceremony. I was very grateful for what I learned about the country and for Paul’s time spent welcoming us.

The welcome to country was followed by fiery and convincing 86-21 win from the ressies against Googong. Well done to them.

Kicking Straight

Onto the senior’s match. This match was key - Googong are fighting for a finals spot and so we knew they would come out strong. Furthermore, a win for us meant that we had knocked off all other team’s in the competition (despite Eastlake but apparently they don’t count).

One thing the Senior’s have been struggling with this year is kicking straight (for which I am personally guilty). Against Ainslie a couple weeks back we finished the first quarter up 7-6, that was 7 behinds to us and 1 goal to them. Anyway, I’m not sure what happened but in this game we finished the first quarter with 3 goals and no behinds to their 1 goal and 2 behinds. We then proceeded to finish the game 12.5 (77) to their 4.7 (31). From analysing the goal kicking technique of my fellow forwards, a key take away for me is to actually look at where you are kicking. The great kickers on our team look at the goal posts during their run up, and then look at the footy during their kicking action. I just look at the footy and completely forget where the goal posts are … duh. Anyway, the benefits to kicking straight are huge, it puts early score board pressure, prevents your coach from ageing (although Tuanny can run faster than me so don’t think that’s a concern), and creates good team morale.

Some highlights of the game. Shout out to our first gamers, Eden and Max. Max kicked 2 absolutely ripping goals from the deep pocket and generously put his hand up to provide a case for the team next week. Eden was instrumental in the back line, Googong couldn’t handle his lightning speed and huge strength. Shout out to him, Dizzie Guy, and the rest of the backline for containing the Googong dude with the bright headgear. This dude was an absolute monster, but nonetheless had no ability to get through our brick wall defence. Towards the end of the game, in his frustration the dude tried to shove Harry off the field of play. Little did he expect that Shaun, our water runner, was in prime position on the sideline to squirt the dude in the face, bringing him to his knees and ultimately sealing the game. Exemplary water running Shaun, well done mate. (n.b Shaun did not give away a free – although he did cop it from the Googong bench … thanks for your sacrifice Shaun).

Some further special mentions go to Luca and his brilliant work on the wing … the Luca->Hads combo is looking dangerous. Wilko’s unmatched hustle around the ball, Mounty for kicking more goals, Aiden P for kicking 8 goals, and Clinton and Aiden M’s poise in the middle.

A get well soon shoutout to Josh who bravely wrapped himself around the top of the goal post in the first half after going hard for the ball (perhaps he was taking our team song literally). Next week is a bye giving the griffos a well-earned chance to rest and recover. The following week is against Eastlake, or is it ADFA? and is the game on a Sunday?? I have no idea, someone buy me a calendar.

Late Addition – Lesson Learned from Thursday Night Training – when to go on holidays, go skiing, get married, have a child, etc, etc
NOT between the months of March (when footy begins) and August (when footy ends). Tuanny hasn’t been on a holiday for 40 years in between these months. Leading by example. I’m sure the club can provide further support if you have issues with life planning and/or simple calculations.

Alrighty, thank you for reading - hope it wasn’t too painful 😊
