Reframing Black Creek Pioneer Village
Through Indigenous History

Tuesday, June 14 at 7 pm on Zoom

Working with the administration of Black Creek Pioneer Village and the Mississaugas of the Credit, the Six Nations of Grand River, Mississaugas of Scugog, Chippewas of Rama, and Chippewas of Georgina Island, a research team of public and Indigenous historians from York University is collaborating to decolonize the 19th century settlement history depicted at this heritage site.

Historians Jennifer Bonnell and Victoria Freeman will discuss the development of the “Changing the Narrative” project, which researches the interconnected histories of Indigenous and settler peoples in the area of the Humber/Black Creek watershed and, more generally, in the region north and immediately west of Toronto – the first step in the creation of new installations and interpretations at the village.

They will be joined by research team member Marcel Fortin, head of the Map and Data Library at the University of Toronto, who will share some of the powerful mapping tools supporting this research.
