From the

Headmistress
Dear Parents

One of my concerns since the pandemic is the swimming provision for our children.  This year we have had to restrict the swimming opportunities for our pupils, to the times offered to us, from our Leisure Centre, in Grantham, and we are still waiting for the confirmation of times offered in September 2022.  We have asked for more time and hope this will increase.

In the meantime I have become aware of a company that provide "Pools for Schools".  Thanks to the support of IES we are seriously considering this possibility.  Mrs Dawson and I will visit a school tomorrow that is currently using this facility to see how the school is managing this opportunity.

There will be challenges to overcome, and this would be a temporary arrangement.  "Pools for Schools" provide a pool which will need to be filled and heated in a marquee and a swimming teacher for 5 1/2 hours a day.  Our hope is that, if we can sort out our electric requirements, we may be able to have this pool on site for the last few weeks of term, giving as many children as possible the opportunity to swim in small groups, daily. Swimming is a very important life skill and we want to see as many children as possible swimming with confidence before the start of the Summer holiday.  We hope to provide you with a positive update next week about this exciting opportunity for our children.

25.5.22 - U10 & U11 Cricket v. Peterborough

On a blustery afternoon at Grantham Cricket Club, Grantham Prep hosted Peterborough School for Cricket. The Under 11 team chose to bat first and after a wobbly start losing a few early wickets, the team rallied back and some big hitting from Freddie and Gabriel towards the end of the Grantham innings, the team managed to post a total of 236.

In response, Peterborough began their chase well, but some excellent bowling from Finley, Austen and Seth tipped the scales of the game back into Grantham's favour. Grantham managed to restrict the visitor's to 207 and thus winning the game 236-207.

The Grantham under 10's won the toss and chose to field first. A combination of tight, consistent bowling and sharp alert fielding saw them restrict their opponents to 232.

Grantham's batting chase began well and never saw them fall behind the required rate needed to win the game. Barring a few silly running errors, the team saw out the victory well, posting a total of 245. The final score Grantham 245 - 232 Peterborough.

In all an excellent enjoyable afternoon played in the correct spirit and with fantastic attitude from all those taking part. Well done!
25.5.22 - U10 & U11 Girls Cricket v. Stamford

On Wednesday 25th May, the U11 and U10 girls set out to play an away Cricket fixture at Stamford school.   Although the skies were grey when we set off, on arrival at the school, they had lifted and the skies were blue.  The girls batted with confidence and demonstrated some consistent bowling, resulting in a win of 277 runs to 270.

26.5.22 - Girls Kwik Cricket Festival at Grantham Cricket Club

What a wonderful opportunity for the majority of our year 6 girls and a handful of some 4s & 5s to enjoy some competitive cricket on an overcast Thursday. We were able to take 2 Grantham teams up to Grantham Cricket Club to compete against 9 other schools with the winners getting the chance to go to the County Championships.

The girls were split into 2 teams (Grantham 1 and Grantham 2) this meant they would be playing in different pools.

Grantham 2's group consisted of 3 other schools, and we would start things off by playing Huntingtower. After a nervy start, the girls started getting to grips of the game providing some great fielding and batting. The confidence you could see was only getting stronger and as the girls played their final group games, the standard they were setting was very high.

As the results came in, the girls finished a respectable 2nd in their group, this would mean they were through to the semi finals and would play whoever finished top in the other pool, which was…. Grantham 1!

Although it was strange for the girls to be playing against their friends, they approached the game in a sensible manner. Myself and Mr Tranter both agreed that the standard of cricket produced by all the girls in that game was the best we’ve seen them all play. On this occasion and by a tight margin, Grantham 1 just managed to sneak through to the final.

The girls were not disheartened by just missing out at all, in fact they did the opposite, they went into the final game with such determination. The girls batted and bowled exceptionally well. Some even hitting the wickets when bowling and getting the opposition out with their quick and brilliant fielding; and in addition their batting, hitting boundaries and collecting runs as and when they could. Their hard work all paid off because Grantham 2 were coming back with the bronze medal!

I cannot speak highly enough of all the girls, their efforts and behaviour throughout the day were top class and they represented our school in the best of ways showing brilliant sportsmanship. Well done girls, you’ve done us proud.

Class 6 Continue their work on Animal Farm

Class six have been continuing their work on Animal Farm and have arrived at the darker part of the novel. This week they have been looking at the attack dogs, who act as Napoleon's personal bodyguard. They have some excellent discussion in class around how it related to the real world in which Orwell lived and then using their inference skills to predict how the novel will end.

11+ Non verbal Reasoning - Getting to grips with the tricky bits

This week we have focused on the areas that each of us finds tricky on the 11+ papers. We have worked in small groups and talked through those questions. We've realised that our main issues really are time and working under pressure. In Thursday's lesson, therefore, we completed a Non- Verbal Reasoning paper with each section timed. We marked each others' and then spent time looking at why that was the answer. Towards the end of the session we focused on cube nets - this can be really tricky - and cut out the examples to check our answers thoroughly and to understand how they work.
Year 4

11+ Verbal Reasoning

Class 4 are getting back to business after their half term holiday with some 11+ Verbal Reasoning work.

Pupils were keen to help each other with demonstrations to show how to solve some of the tricky word puzzles.
Top tips were;
  • to use an alphabet line,
  • to read the question carefully (always helps!),
  • to check the examples given.
Henry suggested that for some problems, you had to use a process of elimination.

Elise explained to the class what a 'hearth' was, as some of the puzzles unearthed some unfamiliar words.

It was pleasing to see so many pupils achieving a top score of 100% - great verbal reasoning Class 4!

Working hard in Class 3

Class 3 proudly showing off their amazing artwork and beautifully written facts about Medusa.

We have also been working incredibly hard in Maths this week concentrating on short multiplication, using Century Tech to back up our learning.

Nihas First Flute Lesson

The smile says it all.  Niha attended her first ever flute lesson with Miss Kerby this week.  If her smile is anything to go by, I think she enjoyed it!!!  Well done Niha.

Back with a bump!

This week, we have been telling the time to 5 minutes. We have been learning that when the minute hand moves from one number to the next, it has moved 5 minutes. There are 12 numbers around the clock face, and each interval is 5 minutes, so there are 12 X 5 = 60 minutes in an hour. We know that if the minute hand is between 12 and 6 it is past the hour and if the minute hand is between the 6 and the 12 it is to the hour.

English

We started looking at recounts this week. First we read Masie’s dragon. Then we thought of questions we could ask Masie. Most of them were, where, when, what and who questions. We then sequenced all the people and events in the story. We are now busy thinking of our own imaginary recounts. Try listening to or reading Dogger, before remembering what happened and in what order.

Year 1
Didn't we have a lovely day?

Class One made a super return to school life this week. After a day in the classroom, discussing everyone's Jubilee celebrations, singing happy birthday to Quinn, eating her delicious cupcakes and dodging wet playtimes on Monday, we were delighted to wake up to a bright, sunny morning ready for our big adventure at Natureland.

Arriving right on time, the children were welcomed by staff and praised for how smart they all looked in their PE clothes. The picnic area had been reserved for us, so after a quick refreshment break, our first stop was to watch the baby seals and older rescued seals being fed lots of sprats, herrings and mackerel. The lady who was feeding the hungry residents gave Class One the responsibility of guarding the overflowing bucket by chasing away marauding seagulls whilst she made a tannoy announcement - how quickly and impressively Class One answered their call to duty - the seagulls stood no chance of a free lunch at all.

After watching the fun and enrichment activities provided by the very knowledgeable keeper, we tried our hands at feeding some farm and pet animals...it was all going so well until Henry, the enormous, greedy goat ate a whole bag of food - including the wrapping! He even took a shine to Quinn's ponytail but we were on our mettle and whisked his target away. The children were fascinated by the plants, cacti and colourful butterflies and birds in the Floral Palace. The alpacas were pleased to see everyone with another bag of food - we even avoided them spitting! On we went to the reptile house and meerkat colony.

Ben the IES Bear enjoyed his day too. He joined us for snack time and lunch, even though there was no sign of a marmalade sandwich! On leaving, the children received more praise for their excellent manners and tip-top behaviour. Their comments make us all extremely proud. Our sincere and grateful thanks to Mrs Dawson and Mrs Thompson for helping to organise such a lovely day out. We will remember our trip to Natureland for a very long time.
Reception & Pre-School
Ben the Bear

Ben the Bear came on the trip to Natureland in Skegness with the Early Years and Year 1 children. During the last few weeks he has been learning about different minibeasts in class and was thrilled to see some different varieties of butterflies in the Butterfly House sipping juice from oranges and other fruit. What an enjoyable learning experience for Ben the scientist!!
Natureland

The children in EYFS were so excited to be joining the Year 1s on a day trip to Natureland in Skegness and everyone was thrilled to see the sun was shining on the journey there. When the children arrived they all enjoyed a fruit snack and drink before they watched the hungry seals being fed. The seals then played a very energetic game of football under the water with a football that was full of fish, of course! The children loved it!

During the rest of the visit we were lucky enough to see some mischievous baby seals being fed, some greedy goats, some beautiful tropical butterflies and numerous creepy crawlies safely behind glass. There were also a couple of crocodiles that were sleeping by the water with one eye open.
A super day was had by all and a big ‘thank you’ to Mrs Bell for organising the visit.

NOBEL PEACE LAUREATE AND FORMER PRESIDENT OF POLAND

MR. LECH WALESA’S CONFERENCE

Offering unique experiences to our students to complement their academic, cultural and social training is one of the objectives of the SEK International Institution.

Last Tuesday, May 24th, the conference entitled "Solidarity in the 21st Century" was given by the Nobel Peace Prize winner and former president of Poland, Mr. Lech Walesa.

The International School of Levante, in Valencia, Spain, was the school chosen as the host for the interesting face-to-face dissertation. It was exclusively offered to its students and a delegation of students from the Eirís International School, in A Coruña, Spain, who did not hesitate to attend it.

During the conference broadcasted for all the students of the SEK International Institution, the students had the opportunity to ask fascinating questions about different current political issues and his political career.

It was an honor to hear his words, through which he conveyed his knowledge, experiences, and the long road he has traveled so that his significant steps have become part of the history of humanity.

D. Lech Walesa left the future of the world in the hands of our young students, placing special emphasis on valuing, caring, and pursuing freedom, our most precious asset: "Throughout my life, I have fought, and now I continue to do so through my t-shirt. Now I can't do anymore, I don't have an army, I am retired, and I am ending my life, but I have never felt indifferent when I have witnessed problems. Therefore, I warn you to fight for freedom and take care of it, because it guarantees the future. You will feel safe, you will have a secure development as a country, and you will not be fooled".
