A Tulip Tribute For a Dear Friend

Earlier this month, visitors to Rotary Hospice were greeted with a beautiful display of 100 tulips, lovingly planted by Rotarians Mimi Price and Patty Riehl in memory of their fellow Rotarian and friend, Ollie Henry. Ollie had bought the tulips with the intent to plant them at the hospice to mark the 100th anniversary of the Rotary Club of Stratford.

Sadly, Ollie passed away before planting them. We are grateful to Mimi and Patty for making sure Ollie’s wishes were carried out, and for bringing joy to those visiting the hospice.

Happy three-year anniversary to us!

On June 21, 2018, we hosted a groundbreaking celebration, marking the beginning of Rotary Hospice’s construction. One year later, on June 22, 2019, we celebrated our opening with the public, and started our service to the community. It has been now been three years of incredible experiences, and people, along the way.

These special dates were chosen because of their connection to the summer solstice, which we see as symbolic of hospice and its role in helping families. The solstice represents rebirth, and the cycle of life that all nature goes through. Summer is a time of growth, in which nature reveals itself to us in its most vivid form, and fully transcends the marks still left from the frigid winter. Hospice, too, represents rebirth of a kind. It connects families and allows them to deal with the difficulties of loss and brings comfort to those that are passing on.

It is in this spirit of reflection that we wish to recognize the community members, volunteers, and staff that have allowed Rotary Hospice to become a reality. Without you, we would not be able to provide our service to the community, and for the help and all of you who continue to support, we are forever grateful.

Some New Garden Additions

A new addition has been added to our gardens all around the grounds. The beautiful rocks our hikers painted have been dispersed around the hospice. A big thank you to the volunteers who ran the booth and all the artists who have contributed.

That's A Wrap on Hike For Hospice

What a day! Our sincerest thanks to all of you who hiked, biked, walked, sponsored, or donated to the 8th Annual Hike for Hospice on Sunday. We are still tallying the results and yet, regardless of the final numbers, our hearts are full for the tremendous support from all of YOU! We are quickly approaching the $80,000 mark in online donations and will surely surpass that with all the extra cash and cheque donations. All the support the Hike for Hospice received this year brings us every little bit closer to our goal, so a huge thank you to everyone!

On that note, it’s not too late to submit last minute donations! We ask that all donations be submitted no later than Sunday, June 12th. Your fundraising gifts ensure compassionate end-of-life care for those in our community with a life-limiting illness.

If you weren't able to join us, check out photos here.

And please, save the date for next year - the first Sunday in June!

With sincerest thanks,

Your Hike for Hospice committee.

How The Letter 'S' Got This Girl Into Harvard

18 year-old, Abigail Mack's essay on hating the letter 'S' got her admission to Harvard University. Abigail's essay was inspired by losing a parent making her 'parents' now only 'parent'. Her mother battled cancer throughout Abigail's childhood and in 2014, she passed away.
