Happening at CSCAC
It’s been a busy week here at the Cary Saurage Community Arts Center and it’s only Wednesday! Arts Council CEO Renée Chatelain held an orientation session for our new board members Monday in the Derek Gordon Conference Room. We’re excited to welcome Darrell L. Johnson Jr., Heather Kleinpeter, James Mack, Patrick Mulhearn, Micheline Millender and Creston Willis into the ACGBR family.
CSCAC was also invaded by a very active group of youngsters on Monday as the first session of this summer’s Artsplosion! got underway with leader Lucy Perrera. A dozen campers spent the day creating works of art and doing a Move Lab with Vagabondance. There are still some spots open for our second session of Artsplosion! July 18-22. Happening Tonight! 

History of the German-Acadian Coast 
June 15, 6 p.m.
East Baton Rouge Main Library
As part of the library’s Baton Rouge Room series Jay Schexnaydre, president of the German-Acadian Coast Historical & Genealogical Society, discusses the enlightening and informative history of the German and Acadian Coasts. In particular the parishes of St. Charles, St. James, St. John the Baptist and Ascension, where some of the first European settlers established homes in Louisiana -- the Germans as early as the 1720s and the exiled Acadians in the 1750s.

Summer Fun

Can you dance?
Intermediate to advanced dancers ages 15-25 can participate in a two-week contemporary summer intensive June 20 – July 1 focused on developing an individual creative voice through rigorous technical training, movement practices and creative process during an intensive workshop presented by Vagabondance. 
Vagabondance is also offering a variety of afternoon and evening classes. They include Improv, Mondays at 6 p.m.; ballet barre, Tuesdays at noon; Movement for All, Wednesdays at 5 p.m., followed by Move Lab at 6 p.m.; and dance fitness, Thursdays at noon.
All classes take place in the Virginia and John Noland Black Box Studio at CSCAC.

Dance For All
The Arts Council of Greater Baton Rouge is providing a wonderful opportunity for dance practitioners and studio owners. Dance for All is a curated workshop that seeks to equip dance teachers and studio owners to create a diverse, inclusive atmosphere for dancers of all abilities. Dance for All is a 3-day, small-group workshop with ongoing support. Shrek, The Musical
June 17 – July 3
Theatre Baton Rouge

After a three-year hiatus, Theatre Baton Rouge returns with its traditional summer musical, bringing to the Main Stage Shrek, The Musical. Based on the Oscar-winning DreamWorks animated film, this Tony Award-winning fairy tale adventure follows a little ogre named Shrek who finds himself on a life-changing journey alongside a wisecracking Donkey and a feisty princess who resists her rescue. Shrek is directed by Marion Mayfield, music directed by Jamie Leonard-Brubaker, choreographed by Kristi-Anne Lyons, and stage-managed by Caty Steward.

Dino Day

After a three-year hiatus due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Dino Day returns to the Louisiana Art & Science Museum with hands-on activities, showings of Louisiana Public Broadcasting’s program Dinosaur Train and play immersive, dinosaur-themed shows in the Irene W. Pennington Planetarium. Visitors can also meet “Jason,” a 65-million-year-old, 1,500-pound Triceratops skull fossil on loan from Raising Cane’s and the Todd Graves Family.

Farm to Forest
The Alexandria Museum of Art is looking for artists to participate in its upcoming Farm to Forest Plein Air Festival, Oct. 13-16, a five-day festival bringing artists to paint outdoors and capture the beauty of the city and its surrounding farms, nurseries and Kisatchie National Forest. Suzie Baker is juror for the show. Arts in Medicine
To celebrate the 10th anniversary of its Arts in Medicine program, Baton Rouge General is issuing a call for art for its juried Celebrating a Decade of Excellence exhibit in the Café Gallery, located on the Bluebonnet campus. Entries will be accepted through July 15 with notifications by July 29. The exhibit goes up Aug. 15 for the 10-year celebration party. All works must be 2D in mediums of original or giclée in oil, acrylic, watercolor, pastels, charcoal, collage, ink or photography. Sizes may range from 5-inches by 5-inches to 48-inches x 60-inches. Arts in Medicine will retain 30% of all sales with proceeds going directly back into the program.

Courting Styles: Women’s Tennis Fashion

“Running for Office: Candidates, Campaigns & the Cartoons of Clifford Berryman,” created by the National Archives with the support of the Foundation for the National Archives, continues on exhibit at the Old State Capitol. This display of creative, insightful and satirical political cartoons by the Pulitzer-Prize-winning editorial cartoonist for the Washington Post and the Washington Evening Star is organized for travel by Humanities Texas, an affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Iridescence: Juried Competition Universe Gallery
Through July 31
Louisiana Art & Science Museum
LASM partnered with LSU Assistant Professor Nathan Lord, his students and colleagues to explore natural and man-made iridescence, the different structures that must occur for the phenomenon to exist via works of art inspired by or created using iridescent materials. Seen here is first-place-winner Benjamin Timpson’s Sielah Saric Auger, 2019, made from safe-sourced butterfly wings.

Grant Workshop & Applications

The Arts Council currently has three grant opportunities available for artists and organizations. 
Applications for Louisiana Project Grants (LPG), formerly the Decentralized Arts Funding program (DAF) are being accepted until 5 p.m. July 1, 2022. The grants solely fund project assistance for innovative, community-based arts projects that will have a lasting community impact. The funded activities must occur between Oct. 1, 2022 and Sept. 30, 2023.
LPGs are available to eligible applicants domiciled in one of the 11 parishes represented by the Arts Council of Greater Baton Rouge. Grant amounts range from $2,500 to $7,500. 
Another is the Get Ready Grant (GRG) program, which supports individual artists in conducting activities that will help safeguard their students, protect their careers and prepare for emergencies. 
Applications may be submitted starting June 13. The Arts Council administers Get Ready Grants throughout the state of Louisiana on behalf of CERF+, with funding provided by the Mellon Foundation.
Finally, applications for the Charles Lamar Family Foundation Shaw Center Subsidy Grant are being accepted throughout the year. This grant provides funding assistance for organizations domiciled in East Baton Rouge Parish with 501(c)(3) nonprofit status (colleges, universities, public schools, and private schools are eligible to apply) to rent spaces within the Shaw Center for the Arts for public art and cultural events.

The Kids’ Orchestra is looking for four program managers to oversee all aspects of assigned Kids’ Orchestra sites. These positions are also responsible for additional duties related to Kids’ Orchestra programming. Applicants must have a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in music, education, training, social work, human services or a related field as well as a minimum three years of experience in education and providing school-based, after-school and/or summer-related programming.
