Dear Brooks Families,

It is truly hard to believe that we are saying goodbye for the Summer. This year has been an incredible journey with your children. They have showed growth and resilience in a year that met them in a far different place from where it has concluded. We have so much to celebrate! I would like to thank the entire PTA Exec. Board for their time and commitment to the families, students and staff at Brooks. In a year where there have been so many uncertainties and changes with how we were able to proceed with school events to include after-school programming, they were understanding and helped to advocate for students’ needs. Thank you to the countless volunteers who came out and supported field trips, the SCA Fun Run, Field Day and many other events that would not have been possible with out their commitment to our children.

It’s always difficult to say good-bye to staff members moving on to other opportunities within and outside of ACPS. All of these individuals are stellar educators and represent the best of what the teaching profession has to offer! Please join me in wishing the following staff members success in all future endeavors:
  • Ashley Lienau- Physical Education Teacher: This summer Ms. Lienau will be moving to Wilmington, NC.  Ms. Lienau shared, "I plan to spend my time going to the beach, exploring the new city, and spending time with childhood friends who live there.  I'm looking to go into the hospitality field.  I'm really going to miss this school.  It will always have a special place in my heart!"
  • Francise Fernandez- Fourth Grade Teacher: Ms. Fernandez is headed to Mary McLeod Bethune School in DC, as the International Baccalaureate Assistant Principal. Ms. Fernandez shared, "Having come from an IB background; I'm extremely excited to get back to IB, and move their program forward while learning how to further coach and guide teachers and students in my new role.  I am beyond blessed and grateful to have been embraced by this school family. The community at Naomi L. Brooks will be sorely missed. Thank you, thank you, thank you for everything, and please keep in touch!

Currently enrollment projections have not yet been finalized by central office for the 2022-2023 school year which directly impacts staffing allotment per grade level. When this information becomes available, I will share it in the Buzz. Ms. Lienau’s position has been filled. When we return we will be welcoming Ms. Tracy Tiernan who is the current physical education teacher at Mount Vernon Elementary. She is a National Board Certified teacher and brings over 20 years of experience.

Brooks will have on-going upgrades and projects this summer.

  • Facilities is working to complete the placement of the LVT in the hallways that have already been abated over winter break on the west side of our building.
  • Phase 3 of our roofing and HVAC project is expected to be completed by August 15th. Materials have been delivered over the course of the last week for an estimated started date of June 13th. Interior painting is scheduled for this summer throughout the building.
  • The window replacement project components are being phased in. Due to the size and nature of this project, the actual removal and replacement of the windows has to be completed when school is not in session. The estimated time-frame for completion is next summer.
  • Facilities is in the process of scoping the front entry security safety vestibule and media center renovation.
  • The continued abatement and asbestos work in the Kindergarten and 1st grade classrooms will be completed over summer break with an estimated time frame of June 15th to August 15th. The LVT will be placed as it becomes available.

Finally, the Buzz will be on hiatus until August when Back to School information begins to be disseminated. Class Placement letters will be mailed around the first week of August. Thank you again to every parent and community member who has supported our Brooks students this year. It would be impossible to do this without you. Wishing you a wonderful summer break with friends and family!

New Grade 3-8 Reading and Math SOL Reports

Starting this spring along with their end-of-year report cards, parents/guardians will receive more detailed information regarding their student’s Standards of Learning (SOL) performance. The new Student Detail by Question (SDBQ) reports, provided by the Virginia Department of Education, will be received by parents of students who took a Grade 3-8 Reading or Mathematics SOL. The report will continue to provide an overall SOL Performance Level, which indicates if a student passed the test and remains the most important piece of information for parents to understand.

New to the report is a Vertical Scaled Score, which  is used to measure a student's progress from one SOL test to another. The report will also provide more detail about how a student performed on individual questions. Students who took an Expedited Retake for either the Reading or Mathematics SOL this spring will receive a report for both test attempts in a content area.

Performance on a Standards of Learning assessment is one indicator of a student’s progress in learning the content and skills represented in Virginia’s Standards of Learning. It should be used with all other information in understanding your student’s current academic performance. To learn more about the new Grade 3-8 Reading and Math SOL Reports, please review this VDOE resource and contact your student’s school with any questions.

If you would like to get ahead on next year. Please find the Supply Lists for the 2022-2023 School Year linked below!

 Medicine Pickup

Today is the last day for medicine pickup. Any medicine, either prescription or over the counter, will be destroyed at 3pm.
