Play Ball!
This historic photograph features the 1939-1940 girls baseball team at the Oak Grove School in Medford. Miss Porter is seated at center, surrounded by 7th and 8th grade students Lola, Winnie, Donna, Gracie, Phyllis, Maxine, Shirly, Nona, Hazel S., and Donna T.
Women’s school-affiliated baseball dates back to the 1860s in the US, but the sport surged in popularity with the founding of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League (AAGPBL) in 1943 – just three years after the above photo was snapped. Originally a response to the loss of minor and major league men’s players fighting overseas in WWII, the AAGPBL was active for 11 years, ultimately employing over 600 women from across the US. Women’s baseball remains an integral part of the contemporary American sports landscape, both at the school and professional levels."
