Where Does the Church Go Now?

by Amy Schenkel

At its heart, the church is a gathering of people. And for the church to be missional today, it must gather in different places and in different ways.

On a late May morning, my son was exploring Liverpool, England, and sent us a short video of the inside of a cathedral. The immense arches draw one's eyes upward to heaven, where the colored light of stained glass windows dances on the ceiling.

Not five minutes later, my daughter, a first-grade teacher, sent a picture of her students sitting on plastic crates in the grass behind the school building, gathered for worship under gray skies.

There is beauty in both. There is a sense of God’s awesomeness and God’s presence in both. There is a pull in my heart to worship in both.

The church today needs both.

Get Involved in Your Community Through Kids Hope USA

Thirty-one Christian Reformed Churches in the Great Lakes region are participating in engaging their community through Kids Hope USA. Some of these churches have been working with Kids Hope USA for more than 15 years. Kids Hope USA connects one church to one local public school, and then the school assigns students to the church mentors. The same mentorships continue throughout the student's time at school.

One pastor shared that when his student moved to a new area school, he was able to stay connected as that student's mentor. Mentors meet with their students during school hours at the school. Some mentors are retired, but others will meet with their students on their lunch breaks. This is a relational ministrynot a money handout.

The Way Church Holland

The Way Church Holland is the newest Church Plant in the Great Lakes region. It is a  Spanish-speaking congregation that gathers with Providence Church in Holland at 10:00 am for worship, then breaks away for their own Bible study in Spanish. On the fourth Sunday of the month, they have a full worship service in Spanish up in the Loft.

We pray that the Spirit will work through this partnership to reach the Holland Community with the love and grace of Jesus Christ!
