As generous donors to SPLC, you are invited to join a special Zoom briefing about the impact that the current wave of restrictive educational laws is having on student journalism around the country.
In May, Sara Ward, together with other student journalists at Lyman High School (Florida) were told that their yearbooks could not be distributed until a section that reported on a student walk-out over Florida's Parental Rights in Education law (aka "Don't Say Gay") was covered up with stickers. Sara, the yearbook staff and concerned students led the #stopthestickers fight which resulted in the Seminole County School Board rescinding that decision. She is now leading the fight to have the district's student media policy changed.
Join us to hear from Sara, in conversation with Andrea Valdez, VP of Community Engagement at The Atlantic (and SPLC Board member) and SPLC Executive Director Hadar Harris, to talk about new and existing threats to student journalism - and what SPLC is doing about them - at the end of this tumultuous school year.
Date: Wednesday, June 29, 7p.m. ET
With: Sara Ward, Incoming Editor-in-Chief, The Greyhound, Lyman High School's yearbook in discussion with Andrea Valdez, Vice President of Community Engagement, The Atlantic and Hadar Harris, SPLC Executive Director
Where: Via Zoom. Advance registration required
