Matariki manako nui                                       Matariki, a time of aspiration

As we enter into June and Matariki it signifies for us a new year. An opportunity to reflect on the year that has passed, celebrate the present and plan for our future. Reflecting on the year that has been, we say farewell to one of the pillars of Napier Family Centre, Mike Healy, our longest standing Board member. As we plan for our future, I am pleased to announce two new Board members: Victor Saywell and Sue Webb. Join us in giving thanks to Mike for all he has done and to celebrate our future with Sue and Victor. I am excited by the year ahead and being of service to those that need a helping hand. We could not do our important mahi without the support of so many – thank you to all for your continued support.

What we've been up to

Farewell to Board member Mike Healy after 26 years
Mike joined Napier Family Centre around 1996 and has been a member of all our governance roles; the Board, Napier Family Centre Financial Trust and the Finance Committee. He has been instrumental to the many changes at Napier Family Centre including moving from a volunteer organisation to a professionally run NGO. Mike was able to see the big picture but also could dive right into the detail which we loved – and his heart really is around supporting families, particularly with children, to ensure they are supported and provided for and that we remain relevant to be part of the village that it takes to raise children.

Welcoming two new Board members
With loss also comes opportunity. We are pleased to share that the Board have recently co-opted two new Board members – Victor Saywell and Sue Webb. Victor’s skillset is broad and impressive with a diverse range of skills in finance, education, not for profit and health. He is also an experienced Board member. Sue Webb is a Counselling Consultant, and she has a long-term commitment to counselling and its links with social justice. Sue also provides external supervision for a few of our counsellors and we are lucky to have her expertise around the Board table.

Advocacy work for Building Financial Capability funding
The 2022/23 Budget was announced on 19 May. A big achievement for us was our successful lobbying work with Building Financial Capability providers to retain the extra COVID-19 funding we received over the last two years. You can read more about it below. We are proud that we achieved this result to be able to meet demand for the upcoming year!

In the Minister for Social Development and Employment Carmel Sepuloni's letter to us following Budget announcements, she noted "Many of my Caucus Colleagues have approached me and stated the case for this funding to be continued past June 2022. I am pleased to let you know that Budget 2022 contains and additional $21m in funding for Budgeting services over the next two years."

Graph: Napier Family Centre saw a steep increase in need for Financial Capability Services during and long after the 2008 recession and are anticipating the same trend in the coming years due to the impact of COVID-19.

Bright Futures is growing, and we have multiple Family Education courses on
As we re-entered into the Orange traffic light setting it has been a flurry of activity as we have welcomed people back to our Playgroups and Community Events and Courses. It’s lovely with the buzz back around our premises. For our home-based early childhood care and education service, Bright Futures, our weekly Playgroups in Napier and Central Hawke’s Bay have been a flurry of fun and activities as we celebrated Mother’s Day, re-planted our garden path in Central Hawke’s Bay with beautiful flowers and made new connections and new friends. Welcoming back Gym Jam in Central Hawke’s Bay has been a huge highlight to support active movement for our under 5-year-olds. For our Family Services team Term 2 has been busy with multiple courses on offer and well underway and we are truly fortunate to be working directly with the Ministry of Education for our most recent The Incredible Years® Autism and Language Delay Programme here at Napier Family Centre.

Refreshing new signage
New roadside and building signs have created a fresh and revitalised approach to our Onekawa premises.

2022 Annual Appeal
On 15 May it was International Day of Families, and we used this week to promote who we are and what we do through our Annual Appeal. This year we tried both a street appeal and a virtual appeal. We were heartened by the feedback and aroha from people who have used our services. It was a wonderful time to connect with the community and offer them Dilmah tea bags to take the time to slow down and connect over a cuppa with their loved ones!

Thank you to New World Waipukurau for allowing our Central Hawke's Bay team to collect outside your store

Thank you to PAK'n SAVE Napier City, New World Greenmeadows, Countdown Napier,
Early Birds Bakehouse & Café, and Napier City Council  for giving us permission to street collect in and around Napier

Thank you to Pub Charity Limited for funding our multi-year fundraising uniforms

The power of a cup of tea
Offering a hot drink can be a powerful tool to demonstrate thoughtfulness, to create space for connection, to offer a form of support, and to use as a conversation pause while a person in distress catches their breathe. People responded well to the Annual Appeal reciprocal giving concept as we looked to remain sensitive to how financially tough it is out there for many businesses and locals now. We hope that whilst we couldn't raise substantial amounts of street collection donations this year, that our presence out in the community showed support and directed those needing help to our website.
