As we continue to offer more free programs at our RUPI HUB, we hope to see you at one or more of these!

We have a BIG vision for making the world a better place: “We inspire and support people in using their power ethically, with accountability, strength, and heart.”

AND we have step-by-step skills and practices for developing your power-wisdom.

YOU can become an advocate for better use of power today….start by taking the free into course or the power positive quiz at www.rightuseofpower.org

Worthy of note: As our global health gets more dire, there is also a groundswell of interest in Power for Good, as Edward Felsenthal, Editor of Time Magazine refers to it in announcing the TIME100 poll results for 2022. “Our hope is that the TIME100 list is not simply a recognition of influence but a study in how influence can be wielded. This year saw advocates for equality and human rights responding to unprecedented pressures. . . . If crisis is going to unite us, we must find within ourselves that same empathy [demonstrated by many of the leaders on the list. These leaders remind us] that we all have the option to use our powers for good.”

In addition, Julie Diamond, see her guest article below, organized a remarkable conference bringing together 650 people who are charged up to use their power and influence wisely and well. Dr. Amanda Aguilera and Cedar joined a host of excellent presenters, giving a program on the Social Dynamics of Power Differential Relationships. It was heartening to see/hear/feel power being talked about by people from multiple locations around the world

SMALL BUT MIGHTY CORRECTION

In the May newsletter, the title of one of the book recommendations from our Board of Directors said “The Profit” instead of “The Prophet” by Kahlil Gibran. Our apology to our Board Member, Ren Feldman.

Upcoming Webinars

Tuesday, June 21st from 1-2 mountain time: A Conversation on Sexuality and RUP, a webinar with Dr. Maci Daye

Join us for a thought-provoking look at sexuality through the lens of RUP.

In this session, sex therapist Maci Daye will discuss how sex positivity and mindfulness can help us reclaim sexual sovereignty, enhance pleasure, and empower partners in long-term relationships. We will look at collective and systemic misuses of power, explore examples of the under and overuse of power in couple relationships, and consider ways to consciously and effectively use our personal power in sexual spaces.

Dr. Maci Daye is an AASECT Certified Sex Therapist, Licensed Professional Counselor, and Certified Therapist and Trainer of Hakomi Mindful Somatic Psychotherapy. Since 2010, she has led her popular retreat series Passion and Presence® in the USA, Europe, and Australia. Shambhala Publications released her book, Passion and Presence: A Couple’s Guide to Mindful Sex and Awakened intimacy in 2020.

Thursday June 30 from 1-2 mountain time: Reframing Hierarchy, webinar with Dr. Cedar Barstow and RUPI Board Member, Farzin Farzad

Hierarchy has a bad rep these days. We want power-with, not power-over. We want to flatten the hierarchy. We’re thinking about shared power and non-hierarchical organizational structures. In this webinar, we’ll be looking at what can happen when we try to avoid hierarchy or disown role power. We will talk about how we can reframe hierarchy so that it can support organizational and leadership growth. What are the characteristics and practices that will help? As Steven Blader puts it: “Hierarchy is a fundamental element of social life. It emerges spontaneously and gives order and co-ordination to the dynamics within social collectives.” This would be what could be called a collaborative hierarchy. We’ll look at how this kind of hierarchy can empower leaders and followers and clarify the separation of role and personal powers.

Julie Diamond on Upgrading Hierarchy

Guest article: Julie Diamond on Upgrading Hierarchy

This article is good reading for our webinar on Reframing Hierarchy. Julie notes, as we have in Right Use of Power, that organizations are doing a lot of experimenting with ways of flattening the hierarchy. She poses the question: There is a good case for flat organizations, but should organizations replace hierarchies altogether? We will be exploring this topic in our webinar, looking at not just organizational hierarchy, but in pair relationships in which there is a role power difference. Here’s the link!
