Jubilee recognition for Geoff Heathcock

Former long-time County Councillor for Queen Edith's and RNLI fundraiser Geoff Heathcock has received a Platinum Champions Award from the Royal Voluntary Service. The awards are an official Jubilee project "to celebrate outstanding volunteers across the country who are making a difference every day." All 490 Platinum Champions received a specially designed pin and a signed certificate from HRH The Duchess of Cornwall. Our congratulations to Geoff.

Spanish food treat tonight
|

Azahar Artisan Spanish Food is at Cambridge Wine Merchants on Cherry Hinton Rd tonight (Friday 10 June) until 9pm. Azahar serves authentic Spanish Bocatas, filled with a traditional Spanish flavour, Chorizo, Tortilla, Pollo a la Brava or Lomo and served in local artisan bread. The wine bar now offers Fizz Fridays, with Champagne or English Sparkling wine available corkage-free.

Beetles are so varied that they make up 40% of all insect species and 25% of all animal species on Earth! As part of the month-long Cambridge Nature Festival, find out a bit more about some of them and then design your own. The event takes place tomorrow (Saturday 11 June) at the Cambridge Science Centre, and is part of the centre's general entry fee. More details here.

Council Area Committee on Monday

The City Council's South Area Committee meeting takes place every few months, and the next one is this Monday (13 June), broadcast online at 7pm. There'll be a report on the council’s Streets and Open Spaces, Environmental Health and Shared Waste service activities; another presentation from the GCP on the road reclassification project; and a chance to raise your issues with councillors. Music lovers will not want to miss the grand return of Proms at the Perse, a three-hour musical extravaganza with over 200 musicians taking part around the school site on Hills Road. It's next Wednesday 15 June, from 5pm. Free tickets are available here.

Three augmented reality adventure trails are now available for Cherry Hinton Hall park. You’ll need to download the free Love Exploring app to your phone and search for Cambridge – then be amazed as dinosaurs, planets or fairies appear in front of you! There is also a tree trail, a mindfulness trail and a sensory trail to choose from. All of the trails are suitable for anybody aged 4 to 104, and you can enjoy them at any time.

Volunteer for your community at the library
|
|
|
The city library service, including Rock Road Library, is looking for Digital Buddies and Library Supporters. Digital Buddies help customers to develop their digital and IT skills, assist with online bus pass renewals, and answer simple digital queries for 1-2 hours/week. Library Supporters offer 2-4 hours/week to help keep the libraries organised, assist with customers’ queries, and occasionally help with events. Anyone over the age of 13 can volunteer, and there are more details here.

Donations needed for church fete

St John's Church Summer Fete takes place a week tomorrow (18 June – more information next issue), and the organisers would appreciate donations of toys, board games, jigsaws and jewellery for the stalls. If you have anything suitable, there's a few days to sort it out and make a note to bring it to the church next Friday (17 June) between 6pm and 7pm. More details here.

Mindfulness in nature sessions on the way
|
|

'Naturally Mindful in nature: an introduction to self care with mindfulness meditation' is the title of four free Saturday morning taster workshops at Nightingale Garden coming up in July and August. These will be run by David Lynch, mindful coach and local resident, in partnership with the garden volunteers, and are booking now. Summer activities for children now booking

The hugely popular Perse Summer School takes place this year from Monday 11 July to Friday 5 August. It is open to all children between 7 and 14 years who love art, creativity, sport and are curious about the world around them. There's also a special course – Adventure Travel – for 16-19 year olds in week 1. Find out more here.

Food Hub news
The Queen Edith's Community Food Hub is open tomorrow (Saturday) as usual, from 10.30am to 12noon at St James Church on Wulfstan Way. All in need are welcome, no questions asked. The Coffee Chat is open too!
Food donations may be brought to the church on Saturday mornings from 10.00am to 10.30am. The team tells us it's usually particularly in need of tinned beans (not baked beans) and tinned fish, but all contributions are welcome.
