Autism /Neurodiversity Month
What is Autism?
According to the CDC, Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a developmental disability that can cause significant social, communication and behavioral challenges. There is often nothing about how people with ASD look that sets them apart from other people, but people with ASD may communicate, interact, behave, and learn in ways that are different from most other people. The learning, thinking, and problem-solving abilities of people with ASD can range from gifted to severely challenged. Some people with ASD need a lot of help in their daily lives; others need less.
A diagnosis of ASD now includes several conditions that used to be diagnosed separately: autistic disorder, pervasive developmental disorder not otherwise specified (PDD-NOS), and Asperger syndrome. These conditions are now all called autism spectrum disorder.
What is NeuroDiversity?
Neurodiversity describes the idea that people experience and interact with the world around them in many different ways; there is no one "right" way of thinking, learning, and behaving, and differences are not viewed as deficits.

A Letter from the President: Now that the school year is coming to a close, I’d like to thank everyone for another great year. We’ve had a very successful year both with community building and raising money for the Campus Improvement Plan. A very big thank you to Mr. Toledo, Mrs. Arrendondo, Mrs. Dean and Ms. Limanni for all that you have done for FoT. A special thank you to the Friends of Thorp board for all of your hard work and dedication in the past year.
A huge shout out to our newest board members Alyssa Jefferies, Kate Whalen, Maureen Murphy and Sophie Gavilanes. You and the board are all rock stars to me, and I truly appreciate all of you. We’ve accomplished so much, and I know that we will go above and beyond for years to come.
We are looking forward to the 2022-2023 school year, our annual events, some new events and most of all gathering our Thorp community together. Friends of Thorp can not wait to start recruiting new and old Thorpies. Don’t forget, as little or as much time as you can give goes a long way.
Email us at friendsofoathorp@gmail.com if you’d like to be invited to our meetings, keep up with our events or just want to know what FoT is all about. We hope everyone has a wonderful summer filled with many memories and fun times. Thank you Jenni Marrero-Hansen and Friends of Thorp
