Susan Zyserman volunteering at the Max Block Food Pantry

A View from the Pantry

For over six years Susan Zyserman has volunteered with The LJD Jewish Family & Community Services, delivering meals to Holocaust survivors, seniors or clients; helping with the Holiday Giving Program; and working in the Max Block Food Pantry.  We recently asked Susan about her experience volunteering and why it’s important to her. She shared the story of one of our food panty's clients. Below is a short excerpt:

One sight that comes to mind is an elderly man, likely in his early 80’s. Very clean-cut gentleman. Sharply dressed, most of the time in a full suit – even when it’s 100 degrees outside in the Florida heat. He walks to the food pantry and carries with him a rolling suitcase. I don’t know where he comes from, but I’m guessing it’s fairly close.

He comes to the pantry as often as possible to get food for his family. I always wondered about him. I wondered where he lived, why he needed so much food, what his situation was, but of course, I never wanted to ask.

JFCS had 13 adoptions finalized at a Mother's Day Adoption Ceremony held at the Courthouse

These big events, held several times a year, are always so special. Everyone feels it. The majesty of the courtroom decorated for the big day, and the judges coming down from the bench to take pictures with the families afterwards. It is a true celebration.

Some of the new families include:

A grandmother who adopted her two teenage grandchildren after fostering them for most of their lives. While their siblings were reunified with their parent, the older two children preferred to stay with their grandmother.

After struggling with infertility, the Ambars became licensed as foster parents, and then found out that a baby in NICU (newborn intensive care unit) was available for adoption. They are now the proud parents of 6½ month old Lunasun.

8 month old Xiana wears a little helmet due to a head injury she sustained at the hands of her birth mother. She has been in foster care since she was 2 months old and now has a forever family.

Molly and Geoffrey Lane adopted seven children comprised of two sibling groups! Molly is a retired nurse and Geoffrey a retired respiratory specialist who previously had fostered several of the siblings who had special medical needs.

Thank You

During Period Poverty Awareness Week JFCS partnered with Renewing Dignity to collect feminine hygiene products for our clients. Their team tells us they collected more items from their day at JFCS than at Sulzbacher, Feeding Northeast Florida, and BEAM combined.
Thanks to all who donated!
You're the best!
