The cities of Englewood, Littleton and Sheridan, along with Arapahoe County and South Suburban Parks and Recreation are moving forward with an enhanced 4th of July Celebration with fun for the entire family. The event will be held at Cornerstone and Belleview Parks on July 4 from 1 to 6 p.m. It will feature food trucks, vendors, face painting, music and more! No personal fireworks will be allowed at the event. 

 “A lot of thought went into this decision by all of our event partners,” said Christina Underhill, Englewood’s director of parks and recreation. “At the end of the day, with the current drought conditions and long-term forecast, we proactively moved forward planning an event that would include more activities and fun, rather than fireworks. This year will have more of a festival feel.”

The Littleton Police Department (LPD) has received reports of phone scammers impersonating LPD officers and threatening residents with arrest unless they pay money to clear up the charges. LPD will never ask for gift cards or credit card information by phone. Scammers often sound official and may demand immediate action. Residents who want clarification or assistance from LPD are encouraged to call Dispatch at 303-794-1551. 

The City of Littleton has been working to identify and design transportation improvements in the area along Mineral Avenue east of Santa Fe Drive to approximately Windermere Street. The Mineral Mobility Improvements are aimed at creating safer and more complete travel options for bicyclists and pedestrians in this area near the Mineral Light Rail Station. 

Using community input, the city developed a list of potential improvements to be considered. Two levels of evaluation were then used to bring forward improvement concepts that meet the city's Transportation Master Plan goals, achieve project-specific goals, and fit within the project budget of $2 million. Improvements are being considered at multiple locations and could include protected bike lanes, improved bicyclist and pedestrian crossings, and a paved and widened Mineral Avenue Trail. 

Community members are invited to attend a virtual public meeting June 22 from 6 to 7:15 p.m. to learn which improvements rose to the top and to share their feedback. Click here for more information about the project or to receive a link to the virtual public meeting. 

Following the meeting, the presentation will be available on the project web page, and printed copies will be available at the Littleton Center at the reception desk, 2255 West Berry Avenue. Comments are requested by July 6. 

Suggestions from the community will be used to refine and prioritize improvements to move into preliminary design. Design is expected to be complete by the end of the year, with construction beginning in 2023.

South Platte Renew’s biogas capture project earned a Climate Protection Award from the U.S. Conference of Mayors, accepted by Littleton Mayor Kyle Schlachter. 

The award honors successful local climate action changing how energy is used and produced in cities, resulting in reduced carbon use and emissions. 

South Platte Renew, the wastewater treatment plant owned jointly by Littleton and Englewood, drew recognition for its Pipeline Injection Project, which captures “biogas” produced as a byproduct of water treatment. The project converts the gas into renewable natural gas which is injected directly into Xcel Energy’s natural gas pipeline.  

The system produces roughly 700,000 thermes of energy a year, enough to power 1,700 homes. Since the system went live in 2019, it has reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 8,900 metric tons. 

Officials from Littleton, Englewood and South Platte Renew began working on the project in 2012, and the two cities split the cost to enact it. The system generates revenue though a federal fuel standard program and is on track for a four- to six-year payback period, faster than originally anticipated.  

“The Pipeline Injection Project is an outstanding example of how cities can utilize wastewater treatment plants to positively contribute to their communities, foster regional partnerships, and improve sustainable practices,” the award reads. “Capturing biogas eliminates odor, improves air quality through reduced local greenhouse gas emissions, and provides a new source of revenue for the participating cities. This overall effort demonstrates how collaboration among several entities and working together can create a complex solution for the benefit of their communities.

Littleton’s transportation planners are seeking feedback on the one-year micromobility pilot program that brought e-scooters to town.  

The city partnered with Bird Rides, Inc. on the pilot program in 2021. City officials have been monitoring the program and are now collecting feedback from residents and business owners.

The High Line Canal Conservancy’s annual Walk for the Canal fundraiser encourages people to walk, run, roll and ride to support improvement projects, including tree planting and safer access along the 71-mile High Line Canal. Walk for the Canal Week, presented by the Friedman Family Foundation, features a week of family-friendly programming June 20 to 26, encouraging participants to explore the Canal and connect with nature and community, while raising funds to help protect and enhance the greenway. 

Walk for the Canal Week allows participants to get involved in a way that fits their schedule and motivation. New this year, the Conservancy will hold daily events and activities on various topics, including a birding walk, sunset solstice excursion, happy hours, Dogs & Donuts event, and much more.

Residents can weigh in on Jackass Hill Park’s future this summer as South Suburban Parks and Recreation explores ideas to improve the park at Jackass Hill Road and Prince Street.  

South Suburban staff will seek community feedback at a pop-up event from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.,Thursday, June 16 at the West Dry Creek Court cul-de-sac on the south side of Jackass Hill Park.

This summer's first Meet Greet & Eat is almost here!  

Meet Greet & Eat provides free pizza and ice cream (while it lasts), as well as activities for children like bounce houses and interactive nature displays from South Suburban Parks and Recreation.   

Events also offer residents an opportunity to have conversations with city council members and city staff about community issues.

The projects identified in the 2017 Master Plan are largely complete, with many accomplishments including a new sports complex, playground updates, and additions of sports courts, picnic shelters, and trails.
