Loreto Highlights Update - 10th June 2022

A Royal Visit
Our pupils were lucky enough to see Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex and his wife Sophie, the Countess of Wessex this week.  Our Year 5 pupils lined Main Street and had the opportunity to speak to the Royal couple.  Our pupils sung a rendition of 'God Save the Queen'.
In the afternoon, our whole school welcomed our Royal visitors as they passed by the school on Europa Road.

A Quilted Story
Year 4 pupils have been studying the book Tar Beach by Faith Ringgold. The story originated from a story quilt.  The author is also an artist whose painted quilt shows Cassie Louise Lightfoot, along with her family and neighbours, on their rooftop, or tar beach as they call it. Cassie takes flight above New York City, owning the buildings and bridges she flies over, as her family and neighbours eat and play cards. This magical story is a wish for Freedom.
Pupils in Year 4 then created their own stories and artwork inspired by the book where the characters now fly over London.
Mr Reader
Our Mr Reader awards scheme is well under way. Pupils have had their badges presented to them by the Library Prefects. Well done to everyone and keep reading those books.

Faith Diary
After May, the month dedicated to Our Lady, June begins with the great Feast of Pentecost celebrated last Sunday. Pentecost is an ancient Jewish feast, which in the Christian Calendar marks the arrival of the Holy Spirit who came, as Jesus had promised, to inspire his disciples and empower them to found His Church on Earth. It is the first of three great feasts held this month and is followed by the Feast of the Most Holy Trinity held this coming Sunday. Known as Trinity Sunday, this feast celebrates the nature of God himself: the relationship between the Father, the Son and Holy Spirit, the Three Persons in one God, which is the central mystery of the Church. This in turn will lead us to the Feast of The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ next Sunday, better known as the ‘Feast of Corpus Christi,’ which is all about that other great mystery of the Church: the transformation of the bread and wine into the body and blood of Our Lord Jesus Christ during the eternal sacrifice of the Mass.

Nautic Nautilus

Mike in Year 5 and Bill in Year 4 are very proud for taking part in the Ocean clean-up organised by the Nautilus project. They are both members of Gibraltar canoeing association.  The session entailed collecting all the surface plastic within the marina area.
Between all the canoeists 9.84kg of debris was collected!  A fantastic effort keeping our shore litter free!

Sounding Science
Our Year 4 pupils have been learning about sound waves this week.
Using different equipment they have analysed how sounds is transmitted and received.  Nothing beats a good old fashion piece of string and a couple of tins!
Lower Primary Sports Events
On Tuesday, Lower Primary took part in their Summer Sports Event. This took place in our Sports Hall where children had the opportunity to showcase some of the skills they have been learning throughout the course of the academic year. There was netball shooting, an agility course, sprinting, a penalty shootout and many other activities. It was an event enjoyed by all! We look forward to next year's sporting events with many more games and activities planned.
Year 6 Adventure Residential
Our Year 6 pupils have been to La Finca Alcaidesa this week.  They have enjoyed a range of activities including Rock Climbing, Canoeing, Abseiling and many more.  It was a fantastic experience where pupils have had the opportunity to develop independence, team working and resilience  It was lovely way to end the year.
Gold Book
Well done to pupils in Lower Primary and Foundation Stage 2 who were presented with their Gold Award certificates and gold pencils.
Tovey Tweet

Pupils in Year 3 visited Tovey Cottage for an educational talk on birds of prey, delivered by Vincent Robba from GOHNS Raptor Unit. Tovey Cottage is an educational centre which gives pupils the opportunity to learn about different species and habitats found in Gibraltar from within the Nature Reserve. Vincent showed the pupils a Lesser Kestrel, a Peregrine Falcon and an Eagle Owl. Pupils looked at several displays in the learning centre which provided details of the rich variety of flora, fauna, and invertebrates that can be found across the Upper Rock.

World Ocean's Day
We are very proud of Miriam and Jamie for their highly commended entries into this year’s Nautilus Project competition, and of Jessica who was awarded 3rd place in the Upper Primary School category. The theme this year was ‘Preserve for the Future’. Miriam wrote a beautiful story on the Moon jellyfish and a Leatherback turtle which she recited at the awards ceremony in Alameda Gardens on Thursday evening. Jamie’s entry was a PowerPoint presentation on the Striped dolphins found in Gibraltar waters. Jessica’s entry was a book on the Blue Button jellyfish. Well done to all three for their success in this competition, and thank you to all the Year 6 pupils for representing Loreto in this competition this year.
