Learn & Earn Year 4 Wrap Up

WORKFORCE LEAD UPDATE
As we round out four years of the Learn & Earn Youth Skills Training Program, we heard a consistent and resoundingly positive message from our 4th cohort of student participants.  They talked about their experience with our employers in manufacturing in Goodhue County and the whole L&E package-OSHA 10 + Soft Skills Training, Industry Tours and Employer Placements.

The value of industry tours:

“It’s been amazing what all the employers have done for us! Industry tours helped me learn how many job opportunities are here – and not small job opportunities – well-paying jobs.”

Ryan Strusz
placed with
Hearth & Home and
Red Wing Shoes

“The industry tours were amazing, I never realized how many job options are available in my area.  Most of the companies we toured are places I didn’t even know existed.  The tours showed me how many variations of work there are in many different industries.”

Michael Slagle
placed with
Knobelsdorff Enterprises and Red Wing Shoes

The value of the L&E Program:

“L&E solidified what I want to do in my future and what career path I want to go into.  There are a lot of companies that I have never heard of until the L&E Program.  It really opened my eyes to all the job opportunities in and around Red Wing.”

“I believe that L&E should keep on getting funded because I learned a lot about not only myself, but also I learned about all the different jobs and career paths in different trades - that really set me up for my future and what I want to do.” Derick Evenson, placed with Knobelsdorff Enterprises and Custom Iron

Thank you to everyone who made these great experiences possible, especially the Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry who awarded us the pilot grant 4 years ago and approved a second grant for the past 2 years!

MAKERSPACE RW TRANSITION

Our current community Makerspace has temporarily closed.  We are actively pursuing a new location and working with stakeholders to design a multi-functional space for makers, businesses, entrepreneurs, hobbyists and artists to come together and create.
We are grateful for our partners at Minnesota State College Southeast for hosting this exciting first chapter and to our Lab Managers, volunteers, members and supporters.
Stay tuned in the coming months for more information.

RURAL AMERICA'S TECH EMPLOYMENT LANDSCAPE
Our partners at Center on Rural Innovation released a report on tech employment in rural America based on a nearly year-long research endeavor.
This work involved two national surveys, a labor market data analysis and more than 50 interviews with tech employers.
They found 4 central themes:
  • The role of employers is critical
  • Rural Americans are interested in tech
  • Rural tech workers take a variety of paths into the field
  • Lowering barriers for rural learners is essential

We believe where innovation becomes reality is located in the heart of rural communities, just like Red Wing.

Founded by the community of Red Wing in 2013, with the support of local foundations and the City of Red Wing; our organization works to fuel economic development by working with key sectors of the community to spur innovation by supporting entrepreneurs, businesses, and students.

By bringing together like-minded entrepreneurs, investors and advisors, Red Wing Ignite creates a unique ecosystem for the Red Wing community to share ideas, resources and expertise.

This, in turn, promotes local and regional economic development through ideation, creation and expansion.
