Catch Up on Recorded Webinars

Last week we enjoyed special events that were part of the third annual Black Birders Week. The weeklong celebration ended on Saturday, June 4. The events were organized by BlackAFinSTEM, a group of Black science and education professionals who seek to inspire new audiences to enjoy nature and birds, and to share that joy with all birdwatchers.

The Cornell Lab of Ornithology co-hosted several programs, including a 3-part webinar series exploring the social aspects of birdwatching. These webinars were recorded; here's how to watch:

#InTheNest: Birding Mentors

In part 1 of the series, Deja Perkins, Nicole Jackson, Dwain Vaughns, and Dexter Patterson discussed the importance of birding community relationships and provided advice for how experienced birders can become mentors.

#LearningToTakeFlight: Beginner Birders

In part 2 of the series, Deja Perkins, Ade Ben-Salahuddin, Jordan Parham, and Jameelah Wright explored what can be done to make the experience of new birders more welcoming, and addressed what might prevent someone from claiming the “birder” identity.

#AsTheCrowFlies: Cultural Connections

In part 3 of the series, Jason Collins, Chelsea Connor, and Deja Perkins shared their stories of how they bring their own culture into the birding experience, and how our cultural connections to birds can shape our birding journey.
